So the LeSabre name is being dropped to be replaced by the Lucerne? Say what? I get images of a milk carton... not a sophisticed sedan. What possessed them to do that? I get making change, but not sure that one is such a smart move.
I could go with Invicta... sounds mean (even if it is hard to say without sounding like a Connecticut accent) To me, the name LeSabre is just too classy to retire. It's timeless and fits their new look really well. Just PLEASE don't ever bring back the Centurion name as some crossover SUV.
Why do US cars often get those French names: LeSabre, LaSalle, Cadillac, Pontiac, DeVille, Sedan, and many others ? p
You didn't want to mention Chevrolet, Jean-Luc..... :beer Ever noticed most names of the Chebby cars start with a C: Classic series (way back in 1912), Corvette, Corvair, Caprice, Camaro, (Monte) Carlo, Chevette, Chevelle, Chevy II, Citation, Cavelier and Celebrity. Lucerne is the English (and also French, Italian and Spanish) name for Luzern, the Swiss city :Smarty: PS: Invicta is nowadays a British sports car Did Buick sell the Invicta name ? (Hence the TM)
I believe that the trishield still used by Buick was supposed to represent the Invicta, Electra, and LeSabre, so with the death of the last one, will they get a new logo? On another note, they should just bring that British Invicta over here wearing a Buick logo; that'd be the poo. :beer
All part of GM's secret plan to kill off Buick. Why else would they ditch model names that have both recognition and loyalty? :ball:
I think the same... It seems that GM learned from the slow death of Oldsmobile and they don't want to see another of their division suffering and slowly dying while some are trying to save it. Their new perfected receipe will make the agony much shorter: Make cars that look average, that have nothing exciting about them, give them new boring names and be sure that the competition had p l e n t y o f t i m e to come with something much better, more innovative and attractive before releasing your new model and you'll have the perfect formula to sell less cars... Even to the most loyal former repeat customers! Then, it will be easy to justify the euthanasia of a brand. As I see it, it's more like an amputation. GM lost an important member when they killed Oldsmobile, now, if nothing SERIOUS is done, they'll lose even more. GM now looks like the Roman empire under the decline, is it possible to stop it? It seems that most of us have good ideas but will we be heard? I hope we will!
Yes, but since the Invicta products in those links are not car related....... It's different when you're using the same name on an automobile :Smarty:
Oh, I've sent notes on their website to warn them. There was a chance that Oldsmobile could have been saved. They just chose not to do it. Their suicide mission? "This is NOT your father's Oldsmobile." Well, guess what, the people buying Oldsmobile WANTED their father's Oldsmobile. Buick, rather than drop the LeSabre name, return it to its roots (including RWD) and put it in its historical place behind Cadillac. You gotta hand it to Cadillac. I wouldn't buy one, but at least they have a mission. Most people these days can't tell whether they're driving an Oldsmobuick, Chebby, or whatever. GM just doesn't get it. Chrysler 300? Ford Mustang? hardly quality automobiles, but at least they get it with the "design matters" thing. Do they really think people are so stupid that they'll think Chevy/Olds/Buick are truly different cars? Pontiac at least LOOKS different with all that tack-on plastic, even if people aren't flocking to buy them. GM is headed for real trouble. Buick could return to its roots and revive sales, but they won't do it. Therefore, make the death humane and quick. I've also BEGGED them... PLEASE don't bring the Centurion name back to the showrooms. They just wouldn't get it right. I pitty the GTO fans. Sure, the new GTO is a great performing car - that's just not the point. I couldn't even imagine the catastrophe they'd create if they considered reviving the GSX. ou:
Worst name aver! Buick was going to call their new SUV the Centiemme. Thank God someone stopped them.
GM lost it's identity years ago when "GM Mark Of Excellence" quit appearing anywhere. It was fascinating to me a few weeks back when talking with some younger people (18-20 year olds), they mentioned something about a Grand Am. I mentioned GM and they had no idea that Pontiacs were made by GM.....I just couldn't believe it I said, who did you think made them,,,, "I don't know, I guess I never thought about it". Well what did you think GM made,,,, "Chevrolet, Cadillac, and oh yea GMC trucks"
Because many people here are silly, so "exotic" foreign names will sell better. I heard that GM supposedly found "Camaro" in an obscure French dictionary, and it allegedly meant "friend." Does anyone know if this is true?
Truzi, your dictionary must be darker than obscure, as this word is not french The closest I know is "Camarade" that actually means "friend". In Portugues, "camarao" means "shrimp", in Spanish "camara" means "room" o No:
They've lost touch with the real world at GM (well the others too). I remember a few years ago when they brought in a new design chief at GM, he was praised and was supposed to turn things around and make great new designs come out of GM. This was like five years ago, I'm sorry I don't remember his name, but either the guy is strapped to the wall in the basement, or he's not the guy to do the job. I can't think of one GM product that is exciting. CORVETTE, corvette... is probably going through a few people's heads, but to me the new corvette is just as bad as all the other cars. Look at the old cars, before mid seventies, I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT'S HAPPENED!!! I just visited Petersen's automotive museum here in L.A. where they have a special on muscle cars at the moment. You just stop and drewl FOR A LONG TIME TOO when you see the hood scoops, hood clips, Black painted hoods, crazy colors, wings, aggressive lines, bold designs, three dimensionality, you feel like you are looking at a real car that makes a real statement. But everything has its time, and right now either the bean counters or car designers , maybe both are down the wrong alley. The new mustang is the way to go, I see more and more of those every day... I thought the grill area looked a bit unpolished on it, a bit unfinished, and yesterday I met the answer on the street. Someone drove a new stang with just horizontal metal bars in the grill, like the aftermarket grills for the chevy pick ups look like. Very nice, the car looked super, that's the way to go.. 300c, mustang, the direction is there... Now get even better.. please. There's alot of heritage to be borrowed from, I think there's more that can be done.
You mean Bob putz? er, I mean Lutz. Whenever I see a new Corvette, the first thing that comes to mind is the typical balding, toupe wearing middle age guy that wears gold chains around his neck. Kinda like the Hummer. Few people envy you, most laugh at you.
