I often see people on Chevy forums who don’t realize how different some cars’ bodies are in coupe form compared to their sedan, wagon or utility versions; the ‘70-72 El Camino especially. Here’s one where the owner built ‘El Chevelle’ using coupe parts and panels. I’m sure Duane can sympathize with his challenge doing that, the finished product really shows the differences!

    Yeah,
It’s a lot of fun welding curved ”Coupe” style quarter panels on the straight El Camino quarters.

The result is the “Coke Bottle” shape we have grown to know and love, but it does make the car look a little “hippy” in the back. By doing this one they lost the body line on the quarter that follows the top edge of the door. On mine I kept that body line and put the curved panel below it. That gave the car a more stock look. (If you look at the pic of the blue car you can see the body line I am talking about.)

The stripes on my car pretty much hide that, but you can clearly see this on the Chevelle style El in the pic.

Personally I kind of like it, plus if you open up the rear wheelhouses like I did, you can put some really big tires on the back.
