It looks like I've wrecked my second "indestructable" TH400.

On the first one, I put in a Trans Go kit and upgraded the pressure relief spring. The instructions with the kit were very poor (this was 5 years ago). The pump went out later that year. Found out later that the spring upgrade was for "race applications only".

I replaced that unit with a $50 used trans from a '78 Cadillac. Put in another Trans Go kit (without the pump relief spring upgrade this time), swapped in my original governor, changed the speedometer drive gear, and put in a TCI Street Fighter convertor. This was good for a couple of tenths in the quarter and ran fine for about a year. It was an original, not rebuilt, and I have no idea how many miles are on it.

Starting last August and getting worse now, the trans slips at low speeds when it's cold. You have to rev the engine to about 1500-1800 rpm to get the car to move. Sometimes this has to be done repeatedly. It will also slip after the 1-2 shift when first going down the road.

I've got a TCI rebuilt transmission lined up, so I'm not planning to re-use this one. I'm just wondering if I should re-use the convertor, or if it might be the problem. Any thoughts on what might be causing the problem?

Geez John, a $50 trans of unknown history and it only lasted a year? I think you got a good deal there. SOunds like your forward clutches are on the way out.
I would suggest having the converter checked, It should be ok, but may have some trash in it. ALso have the cooler flushed or replaced.

I agree with Jim there. Chances are the converter is probably fine but it would be wise to get it flushed.
