Trans was leaking bad from the pan gasket (at least I hope thats where :laugh: ) I took the pan off today and it had a cork gasket on it Some of the bolts look to have been over tightened and the pan is not the straightest on the flange, and what the hell happened for all these dents!! The price of a new pan is not that much money and I can wait for to be delivered etc but all I can find are chrome ones.. no OEM 1 - would you get a new one? Also, there was film of 'gray' substance, I assume fine metal on the bottom of the pan that wiped out easily, was no thickness to it, just a film, previous owner said it was rebuilt, 2 - maybe this is normal for a newly rebuilt. Trans runs nice. Finally, the old filter was loose. 3 - The bolt holding it was tight but maybe its too long or needs a washer? your thoughts before I put on the new filter? 4 - filter kit from autozone has a rubber gasket to go over the tube on the trans, and also has a loose o-ring, I dont know where this goes or is it extra?

The filter doesn't really get tight from the bolt. The clip just keeps it from falling off the o-ring, so you're good there. And, no, I've never seen a pan with that many knuckle-bumps on it!

I hit a speedbump at a good speed once and hit the skidplate hard enough to wonder if the engine cradle cracked. I'm sure it left a few little dimples in the oil or trans pan. That was on an '84 lesabre with very worn out suspension
Re: TH400 pan.. is this still usable? how does one get this dented? filter seems lo The only OEM pan available is a deep pan from GM, but I wouldnt recommend it as it will sit lower inthe chassis. I was in the same perdicament with my 69 Riviera. Needed a new pan but none to be found. What I bought was a stock depth polished aluminum pan with a nice thick mounting surface. So no chance of the flange warping. Plus it had a built in drain plug which makes future filter changes easier (unless you enjoy showering in Dextron). I think it was like $40 or so. I really dont like the "bling", but it works well. I use one of the plastic lids off my garbage can for a catch basin. I drill several holes in it, flip it upside down and place it on my drain pan. Works like a charm.

As was mentioned, the filter bolt is a limiter, not a solid anchor for the filter. I suspect it is only really required for installation as the filter rests on those two dimples (the factory ones) in the pan. You might try a transmission shop to see if they have a good core you can buy cheap.
Re: TH400 pan.. is this still usable? how does one get this dented? filter seems lo Yes, some material in the pan is normal, no worries there. The filter bolt is a special collared bolt. It lets the filter move with the fluid level. That is the way it is supposed to be. The dents look like the transmission was left laying on the pan, and maybe was moved around and/or dropped. I'd replace it. I use the deep pan from GM. Holds another 2qts of fluid, keeps things cooler. I like it. I don't worry about the clearance, my MT headers hang lower than that, and I'm careful. NY roads suck, but not that bad. TH400 pan.. is this still usable? how does one get this dented? filter seems lo Hey I have had pans worse. I just hammer them out, get the dimples right, and the seal must be flat. But mine all have a drain plug brazed & tapped. There is a stack of them on my shelf, hammered, drained, blasted & painted, for switch pitch conversions. If you had a cast aluminum pan it would hang lower, and most important a big bump will crack it, you are out of business. Blue gasket probably will leak less, but make maintenance pretty difficult. And as for the o-ring that comes with the kit? a little less than 1" diameter..I don't know what it goes or even if I need it. The filter has a rubber gasket that pushes over the pick up tube, and I didn't see an o-ring on the old filter anywhere
