I need a confirmation of how much ATF ends up in a TH400. Long story short, the original tube, and dipstick to the transmission are long gone. I currently have a tube off the shelf and a chrome dipstick in there now. Online sources suggest 4 to 6 qts depending on who you ask. I know there was atleast 2 variants of pans from the factory, shallow and deep, and i have an aftermarket cast pan to put on there. This trans started with a shallow pan, then my trans guy gave me a deep (motorhome version), and im getting ready to install a B&M pan. What im looking for (ideally) is where should the FULL mark be on the dipstick with respect to something that never changes, like the tranmission case? One google search suggested that the FULL level of the fluid is even with the pan gasket, OR that it is the level of the machined surface where the pan gasket mates to. Is this correct? Im installing the new pan, and want to be 100% sure where the level is supposed to be, before i put the new one on. Thanks.
A TH400 with 13" converter contains 12 quarts, and it won't operate unless fairly close to full. A smaller converter would reduce this some, and a used converter will contain some fluid. Bruce Roe
