Local fellow has a couple transmissions he can part with quite reasonably. He's thinking they are TH400's. BOP & possibly Jeep bell housing was easy to spot. Didn't think to look at the pan. These are under many years of grease & grime. Case, housing & tail piece are all one casting. Kick down looks to be cable operated, right side, similar to a TH350. Tag at right side on rear: Turbo- Hydromatic E G 166-1T81EG0218 Stamped # left side: 3BM310629 Anyone know if this will work in an A-body Buick? I'd like to get them as spares if they will fit.
They aren't 400's. 400's have an electrical kickdown and have a separate bolt off tailshaft. One piece casting could be later model THM 200/700 C/R4 The cable you see is probably a TV cable. Do you see a vacuum modulator on either trans?
TV, stands for Throttle Valve cable. Alot of late model transmissions use a TV cable to control all aspects of a transmissions shifting characteristics, kickdown, shift point and firmness, etc. The THM 200, 700, and other transmissions use a TV cable. Chrysler transmissions use them too, I believe, even the Musclecar era transmissions.
I would stay clear of those transmissions, the one piece housing might even be one of those "metric" transmissions, not very strong, and you have to figure there must have been a reason the were pulled from the donor car originally. It won't be a good deal if they are weak transmissions that you have to have rebuilt anyway. You could probably buy a rebuilt TH400 from NAPA or checker/auto zone etc.. for less than it would cost to get one of those trans rebuilt. I bought mine from checker 4-5 years ago. I ordered 1 for a 70 olds 442 to get a short tailshaft unit, and when it came in I turned in a fried one from a 76 Electra (long tailshaft) since the TH400 has been around so long, I got it for under $200. I don't know what they go for now days. Just my thoughts on the subject.
