I am putting a '69 430 from a Wildcat into my '71 Skylark. Is there any reason to use the TH350 over the TH400 when I put this in my car? I know the TH400 is heavier duty, but won't the TH350 also handle the 430?

    Thanks,

It's a toss up. You may want to use the transmission for whatever driveshaft you allready have for it.

If you are pushing over 500+HP quite often, look into the TH400.

FWIW, I use a built up TH350 with my 455

If it is a stock 69 430 then a stock 350 with shift kit will last at least four years of drag strip duty! I did this with a Monte Carlo years ago. It was a 75 model car that had a 69 430 in it for 3 years then a 455 in front of it next.

Use what ever trans will work with your drive shaft.

Well, let's make this more interesting, I am building a mild 455 in my 71. I bought a TH400, but did not want to deal with cutting the driveshaft. Will my existing TH350 from my small block handle a 455?

    alec296 i need another buick

for street use the 350 trans is great
my 430 isnt stock and my trans was rebuilt back in 1990
the 430 has gone out once but the trans takes more abuse
it has a 700r4 sprag and heady duty clutches and slams hard
with 3.42 rear and the detent cable set right i have no need to manually
    downshift the trans

I agree it's a toss up for street use, but one other thing to consider is the TH350 has a little bit steeper gears (ie, 2.52, 1.52, 1:1) than the TH400 (2.48, 1.48, 1:1), if I remember correctly, which would help your launch a little bit.
