I plan on replacing all the external seals while the trans is out of the car. I've watched a couple videos on front pump removal and replacement. It doesn't seem to difficult, but I'm just wondering if there's anything I need to pay special attention to or if there are any tips anyone has. Thanks, Jim
The only thing I remember being a bit tricky is aligning pump halves if you had the pump apart. I made a giant "hose clamp" thing using mechanics strap to keep everything aligned while tightening the pump body bolts. Other than that, I remember making a couple of alignment pins for installing the pump into the case. I think I just used some longer 5/16" coarse thread bolts with the heads cut off. Definitely easier to do this with the trans standing on its tail. I use on old plastic milk crate turned upside down, square piece of plywood screwed to the bottom with a 2" hole drilled out of the middle for the output shaft to pass through, allowing the trans to sit flat on the output shaft housing flange. I put the output shaft housing on after the trans was ready to sit horizontal again. Plenty of petroleum jelly on the pump seal and converter seal, and all should be pretty straight forward. Good Luck! Devon
Slowly torque the pump bolts, stop frequently to make sure the input shaft will turn. If it locks up before the bolts are fully tightened, more than likely you don’t have all the clutch plates lined up.
