Ok, I am no tranny expert at all. I brought my GS into aamco to get it flushed, an had a coupon for a free diagnostic. I Know my tranny has issues, it hangs on first gear at low speeds, and sucks to drive in traffic. On the highway, it runs like a dream. Anyway what I thought was the original tranny is actually a TH-700 4 speed with overdrive according to aamco. Are there any issues with having this, good/bad, pros and cons? I am bringing it in in September to have the shifting problem fixed, any idea on the cost, $100,500,1000???. They said that the drive shafts were shortened to accomodate the tranny. Other than the 1st gear shifting issue at low speeds it drives great. Thanks for any replies!!

I have had one in my car for about 4 years and love it. :3gears:

I will never go back to a non od in any street car!

The shifting late into 2nd gear could just be the tv cable adjustment is out of wack or the pivot point on the carb is not right.

A good trany shop should be able to fix it up under a couple of hundred bucks if it is in good shape.

Actually, as Mike above me said, the 700R4 is a great addition to older cars, especially if you dont have to do the swap yourself.

The overdrive improves drivability immensly. I'll let those who have done the swap continue, but I didn't mean to make it sound like it wasn't a good idea... its quite the opposite of that, actually. Its a great idea.

That is good to know. I bought it after the swap. I read some of the information on the sites you posted, and I am going to check out my TV cable tonight. After that bad shift point, it drives like a dream.

Any advice on adjusting the TV cable? I am going to follow along with the directions above, but they are not real clear.

Thanks guys, I feel a little better about the tranny now. The tranny guys test drove it and said nothing about the tv cable, they said they would definately have to open it up.

    Thanks again!

    Tranny

I had swapped one into my Vette a couple years back. There are serveral bad years for them. I can't remember the exact years, something like 83, 84, and some in 87. I am sure if you call bowtieoverdrives.com they can help you out. As for the late shifting, I had that same issue. It wasn't a cable adjustment. I bought a $25 kit to fix that issue. Unfortunately, I think I just threw the extra one I had away yesterday. I couldn't get rid of it. I will look and if I still have it you can have it for shipping. It changes a few springs and has you drill some holes in several places. If I remember right I bought it from bowtieoverdrives.
