What is a good recommendation here? Is the old style cork best or is there a
newer material that holds up better? Thanks

    gasket

Use the cork without any sealer. If it wont lay flat set a box on it overnight.
Make sure your pan is flat and dont over torque the bolts, just snug enough to
compress the gasket a little and keep them from loosening up.By the time the
cork hardens too much to seal well it will be time to change the fluid again.
Trust me,I have done this many, many times and they dont leak.

cork or fiber, stay away from the rubber ones and dont over torque the bolts. use a 1/4 drive speed handle so you cant over tighten them. thats the most common reason for leaks, bolts get over torqued and bend the pan and split the gasket.
