TH 350 no WOT upshift

  1. I've got a th350 that has been rebuilt and has a B&M shift kit, and it has been working flawlessly and shifting good. Then one day it would not shift out of 2nd gear then it would not shift into 2nd, Iv'e had this happen before so I swapped the govener out, and the one that came out the tranny the valve was stuck, so I put another one in and made sure the valve worked and it did. so the tranny shifts fine at part throttle and all gears are there but there are no upshifts at WOT so I let some tension off the kickdown cable the part throttle upshift is very close to the end but still no WOT upshift, what's going on? is the new govener I put in stuck again?

If you shift to 2nd gear at PT, then accelerate hard does its slip, or return to 1st?

  3. It will shift into 1st, definatly doesn't slip,

  4. well now coming to think about it, sometimes before it would just rip up the rpms then engage in 2nd kinda like a slip but I wouldn't really call it a slip. OK OK OK part throttle 2nd gear then get into it, so it would either drop into 1st then not shift till i backed out of it, or it would just rev up kinda like a slip then hit hard at the top of 2nd gear, almost like having a 3000 stall converter.

Have you tried removing the kick down cable all together?

hmm, I had a converter go bad that sounded like the last part of your last statement...

You've got a broken intermediate sprag race. Common failure, you can thank the B&M shift kit for that.

Transmission will have to come out, be totally disassembled, a new direct drum, roller clutch, sprag race, as well as a complete rebuild.

The chunks and metal debris will get all throughout the trans and it gets imbedded in the clutch material, in the converter, etc.

I'll make an educated guess and say this thing was setup using the B&M shift improver kit on the Street/Strip setting with the feed holes drilled to 3/16" and most of the checkballs left out....

Rebuild it, get rid of the B&M kit, install a TransGo kit.
If you race it often you want a 36 element sprag and drum setup, it is a much tougher setup than stock. Not necessary on a mostly street driven 400 HP car, but good insurance on anything with higher HP or often raced.

Don't do WOT burnouts in 1st or 2nd gear.
Don't do manual downshifts from 3rd to 2nd while under hard deceleration.

I have a rebuild article here that goes into more detail:

  8. Well crap sounds like I should just go out and finish this trans off completely. Thanks for the GREAT reply and advise Jakeshoe..

Yes you hit the nail on the head B&M kit on street&strip setting only 2 check balls and the holes drill to 3/16 exactly like you said.
all B&M kits on street&strip setting cause this?
