    Interesting...

The W in the VIN indicates the hi po 455, as well as the buildsheet.

That is a beauty of a car. It will be interesting to see what it will bring.

I suspect the stage one sticker was added though to the air cleaner. I think Smartin was part of the exercise we went through to verify the differences between a stage one and a 455 Hi PO engine. The HI PO motor does not have the stage one cam shaft , carb, or distrib. It will have the bigger valves and a camshaft that is unique to the 455 Hi PO engine.

From what I've read, the '74 was called the LeSabre Luxus and was marketed with a Stage 1 option. What exactly that option actually entailed I don't know, but that might explain the air cleaner decal.

So was the Riv which had a Stage 1 emblem in the grille in I think 74. If not it was 73 but the engine was never a stage 1 engine for the reasons stated above. I think stage 1 package that year meant handling package , posi and Hi Po engine etc. Confusing but true I believe.

I have seen a 73 Stage Riv with the badges on it, but never a 74 Buick with it. Even if the Stage package was just badges and a slight package it's nice to see a prestine car with it.

I will have to stay away from my banker until this one's gone! I don't need anymore payments.

I was thinking the stage One as we know it in say 70 was an L -75.

L-76 was the Riv GS/Centurion hi po engine option. In 1973 and later, the "Stage1" big car motors did not include large valve heads to my understanding.

If you look at this cars posted option sheet on eby it says L76 -Hi-po. I did not see L75 or stage 1.

My fingers get in the way. but it does say Hi-Comp. I thought L-76 was the stage -1 code?

I believe the stage 1 code is L-75.

On my 74 Lesabre Luxus convertible I have the original window sticker and build sheet. On the window sticker it lists it under a code- A2 Ride and Performance package w/modified 455 cu in engine, THM400 transmission, dual exhaust, steel belted radial tires, high energy ignition, rear stabilizer bar, trunk trim, custom mouldings, litter pocket, deluxe steering wheel & accent stripe. It was a $611.00 option. The buildsheet does list it as a L76 and it has the W in the vin.

My 74 Riviera is a GS with Stage 1 badge in the grille, and is a W code. As I understand it from the available sources, in '74, the stage 1 Riviera used what was called the Hi-po in the other models like the Centurian, but was not really a Stage 1 engine. They may have still had the big valves, but I don't know. The cam was not all that hot, and compression was the pits. Dan
