Did the Transmission Control Spark (TCS) solenoid mounted to the front of a Q jet originally come on a 4 speed equipped GS 455 car just like the auto trans cars.
Cdn. GM Parts Book states it did. Gr.2.408 # 1114430 for ,70-73 350/4BC/Hi Comp. Engine. '70-74 455 Engine. No mention of AT or ST. Another # applies to 350/2BC.
I think we have owned two 70 GS 455 4 speed cars cars with these solenoids on them but I am beginning to doubt myself a bit and say they came only on autos originally. Anyone else have an original 4 speed car with the TCA solenoid on there?
These solenoids were energized when the trans. is in high gear. Allowed more advance at higher speeds. Gr.4.075 # 9799850 - Switch, Transmission Control Spark, '70-'73, All ST.
Oh yea its coming back to me now. The switch sticks out of the drivers side of the bottom of the Muncie. The tip of my switch is broken off. I am looking for one. Any leads would be appreciated.
Well,,,,,,hmmmmmmmmmmm, I think I have one from a 70 Wildcat that I stripped last April! Will have to locate it. I know I have it but hope you are not in a rush for it. Let me know the part number on it to confirm I have the right one for you.
Thanks Rob I was aware of that. To be honest this brings up an issue that has nothing to do with you part in paticular. The issue is NOS parts have gotten so expensive that a restorer is so often just better off replating an old core part. The finish will most often look freshly done while NOS part plating has deteriorated on the shelf. I know Herb and I discussed this issue regarding headlamp covers. By the time they are this old and given the fact that many factory plate (and paint)jobs were marginal to begin with you are going to get a better result with a refurb on an old part.
Jim, The TCS I have for my '71 350 falls into a category between NOS & refurbished. I found a steel case with the plastic tubes broken off. Cleaned up the case & set it aside. Ended up buying a NOS TCS to fit an early "Chevette" or 6 cyl "Nova". Case is different for mounting reasons only, but the solenoid & tubing is identical. It was very cheap. Transfered the NOS parts into my old case.
Yes great work there Steve. Scott showed me a good example of pics of taking one apart. It is hard to see this part under any circumstances when the ram air cleaner is used. You just cannot afford to restore a car with just NOS parts anymore. They are too hard to find and cost too much when you do.
Certainly not a "Concours" restoration but this was close enough to new/NOS for the girl I go with. There was also a small filter on the tube facing the driver's side. Fitted on the outside like a sock. Ever see one of these?
The Olds we are putting together is a 4 speed and it has one on the side of the Muncie. The vacum switch is not mounted on the carb, rather on the intake just beside the carb. I have yet to run across one still hooked up. Did it really improve performance? I have found some Muncies with it and others without. I have an late 60's M21 without it and a 1971 Rockcrusher without it. Did Chevy have it? Or was it Olds and Buick only? I am going to hook it up on this Olds just for looks.
Steve, That TCS looks great! BTW did you also do your own carb? I am getting ready to rebuild my carb and was looking for a good plating service. Thanks,
Rob, Thanks for the kind words. I rebuilt the carb. too but in no way am I an expert on them. I have rebuilt carb. on the car now & it's working beautifully. Carb. work was done by Jim W. @ TSP. Bought a core at Carlsile last Fall. I wanted to see what makes them work as they were always "that thing under the breather" to me. Learning curve can be pretty steep at times. Cleaned it up, had it rebushed & put it back together with a kit & some new exterior parts. I now have a "general" understanding on the various functions of the different components. I'm confident I can get gas to go thru it but I'm a little crude on the tuning side. The plating is actually an Eastwood spray product from the Carlisle trip. Easy job for a beginner but will need help setting up the car once installed.
tcs solenoid m&h auto electric sells some of those tcs solenoids and ive seen a bunch on e-bay,4 speed also, just type tcs in the search and a bunch will come up
I had to buy one of those years ago from some store in Ohio that sells obsolete smog equipment for us in California that need to smog our cars. We now have an exemption for cars 25 yrs and older. Last time I got smogged was probably 7 or 8 years back. Car didn't have the switch and the SMOGNAZI made me get one. I have an aftermarket tranny - no switch in it. So I just stuck the TCS on the carb plugged in the wire and was good to go. Passed smog even if the TCS was nonfunctioning. WHAT A JOKE! Then I took it off. Now I see it's worth a bunch of cash. Think I better sell my NOS TCS complete with original box.
