I was Looking at these Transmissions in Jegs, and since I'll be needing to replace my Transmission soon, I was wondering how well built these are. Anyone have any opinions on them? Any idea how much torque they can take? How does the Automatic/Manual shift feature work? any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'd like a bit of info about the TCI product also. I would imagine for strength they should be able to stand up to some pretty tough treatment. After all, they are the T-400. Pretty impressive slush-box right from GM.

The Manual/Auto feature means that you can hold the transmission in 1st or 2nd to any RPM your engine can reach. Normally, the dance with the govenor and the modulator tell the trans when to shift. Even if you hold the shifter in first it can and will shift to 2nd at high enough RPM. Manual/Auto will shift normally when you have the shifter in Drive. Some kits will also do the 1-2 shift if you leave the shifter in 2nd.

If you are going with a higher than stock stall converter, you definitely will want to go with an aftermarket transcooler. I'd run the biggest, most efficient one I can afford and not run the trans fluid through the radiator cooler.

    Just my $0.02.

I don't know if if it would eventually shift on its own, but a stock TH400 will stay in first gear in "L1" to at least 5500 without upshifting until you tell it too.
A good transmission cooler is ALWAYS a good idea, not matter how hard yu are running it.
It is better for the transmission to calibrate the governor to the shift point you want and race in "D." Manual L1 uses a band which will wear out faster that the clutches used to actuate first gear in Drive. I know you can modify the governor to get even 6500 rpm shifts in Drive.
Lastly, if you can find a reputable local transmission builder, I would use him long before I would buy (and pay shipping for ) a trans from Jeg's.

I have a TCI street fighter converter in my 71. Its been in there for over ten years. Never had a problem. Im sure their transmissions are as good as their converters.
