Check the connector at the back of the carwhere it exits the body & goes to the lail lamp harness. If loose or has dirt it it clean it completely. This should also tell you if the harnesses going forward sre sny good. Check your grounds to the bumper area in the harnesses also.
I had the exact same problem on my '70. I removed the bumper for replating and made sure there was a good bumper-to-frame ground (and harness ground) when I reassembled everything. It works like a charm now.
Flat wire beneath carpet. Pete, I had the same problem with my 67 Riviera. The cause was a loose connection between the Wiring-harness beneath the dash and the wide, flat wiring-cable that runs beneath your floor carpet to the rear of the car. I must have kicked it loose, because it's placed just beneath the carpet, near your Left foot. It is a 2 inch wide flat connector. Originally it is locked together with kind of barbed hooks on each side, mine was deformed and didn't lock no more. It caused me some gray hairs before I found it. At some point I even laid extra wires to the rear-lights, just to be able to drive the car. I was mighty relieved when I found what caused it.
I had the exact same problem on my Skylark. I only found it when I accidently bumped it and it came apart.
