I have a 1969 Skylark 4-speed with a factory consolette. I would like to locate and install a tach on the consolette. Can anyone advise as to the specific tach that I need to locate? Will any Buick tachs other than the 1969 vintage/model year tach fit the consolette? Is there any necessary hardware or installation issues? Can anyone post a picture of the tach, inside and/or outside of the consolette?

I have one. I assume they are all Buick tachs which look like old sun tachs or stewart warners to me with the Buick name on them . They go inside the bezel where the trishield is located from 70 up. I am not certain whether it was available as an option or special order beginning 1970.

    Jim,

Should it look like this one here ? Are they all pretty much the same from the early 60's on up?

    gs4u2c Is that a 442?

You can use any Buick (console) tach from 1962-up to 1972, including big cars (obviously not the in-dash tachs). The cups/mounts are different in different models, but the "guts" can be removed and mounted in any of the different housings. So just look for one that says "Buick" on it like in Chris' picture. You can do like me and buy a Wildcat tach with console for $75, remove the guts and sell the empty housing/cup for $30, and the console for $40. There are almost always lots of these on ebay and prices are all over the place.

This may not be important to you, and I am no expert. There were two different designs for the tachs. One is a 6000 RPM and the other 7000. I only know that the 6000 is what is supposed to be in my 67. The other differnce is the wording on the face of the tach. On the 6000 RPM tach, the wording 'RPM Hundreds' is curved vs straight for the 7000 RPM tach.

Also, some of the 'knee-knocker' tachs don't fit correctly in a console. I bought a 6000 RPM tach for my car that was a 'knee-knocker' style and had to modify it to make it fit. Like I said, I am no expert on this so I could have had a differnent year tach and that is why it didn't fit. The size was correct, but I needed to put some notches in the lense to fit correctly in the console.

If you see on that is in a console mount already, that would probably be your best bet. All of the ones in the auctions above are 6000 RPM. Here is a 7000 RPM tach:
