TA "Gibson" cam feedback

I'm helping a friend put together an engine shortly and am interested in feedback on camshaft selection. The engine is going to have TA Stage 2 heads with the 11/32"stem guides and we'll do a little bowl cleanup and some chamber work. Flow numbers should be in the lower 300's on the intake. with hopefully a 80% ratio int. to exh. An SP1 intake with a good carb in the 950 to 1,000 cfm range. Forged pistons will be down in the hole about .015" with notches, with a Felpro gasket (.038")
The application is mainly strip use but will see occassional street duty. The car weighs about 3,200 lbs. empty with 3.73 gears and an 350 automatic. I'm looking for input that anyone has with the TA "Gibson" grind. Mike lists two grinds, one on 107 LSA and one with 110 LSA. Both have .050" duration #'s of 243* int. and 247* exh. This looks to be just about what we're looking for, but would like to hear more about how either one really "works" from those who have run them. The 110 would be a little tamer of course. Thanks

Old thread, but has anyone tried this cam yet?

    Dave,

Contact Jim Byers thru the board here.. his username is offbrandracing

He had one we took out of a motor, in favor of a larger solid cam.

So he has experience with it.

I also still have that good used cam and matching lifters for it, and they are for sale, if your interested.

IT's the 107 LC version, and should make some good power, but the idle will be a bit wild.

    Jim,
too bad that is the 107 version, or I would take it for sure! I need the 110 LC version.
There really aren't a lot of hydraulic cams for the stage 2 street engines available. I would think TA would have something more available, or at least a good description of the 296-08H.

    Steve,

The Gibson cam that Jim has is a really nice cam and has very few miles on it. I ran it for about 4 months in my Stage 2 before I made the big switch.

Have you ever thought of using a small solid?

    Regards,

I would rather run something like a 210S, but I can't afford the roller rockers right now. I really don't need the power anyway, since my car won't have a cage in it. When I back-halve the other 69 and use it for a race car someday, then I guess I will switch out to something like the TA294-98F, but that will most likely be years down the road.
How did that cam run in your car?
I wish I could use it (the cam Jim has), but the 107 lobe center won't work with my motor. I actually wish they made something similar, but with a little less duration and a wider lobe center (like a stage 2 version of the 290-08H)

    Steve,

That cam worked really well in my car. Idled around 900 w/ a healthy lope. Unfortunately I don't have any track times but it really woke the engine up over the "hemi killer" cam that I was running. Why do you need the wider lobe seperation for this project?

Can't you run the 210s w/ by using adj pushrods?

The 294-98F is the cam I have now and it is a great street/Strip cam w/ more strip than street. I used it instead of going to the 308 which JW talked me out of.

    Good luck on your project!

    Jim,
I just saw that you answered this post... I forgot to check on it. Anyway, I was planning on running the wider lobe center version straight up to get the dynamic compression lower for pump gas use in a 10.8:1 motor. Looking at the numbers again, it looks like the 107 version would probably work.
For some reason that I don't understand, desktop dyno shows the 110 center version making more power than the 107 LC version. I can't figure out why that would be, exactly.
As far as the adj. pushrods... wouldn't you have to pull the intake manifold to adjust the lash? I think I'll wait until I can afford the roller rockers. I think I will most likely be making more power than I can use already, with the ported stage 2 SE's. Is there really such a thing as too much power, haha.

The adjuster for the adjustable pushrod goes on the rocker end, so you would not need to pull the intake to adjust, just the valve covers.
Is there such a thing as too much power? NO WAY! Jim Burek
