I have a ta cover for my 8.5 rear and usually the gasket gets a thin layer of black rtv on it to help seal it. However ta's instructions make no mention of any sealant. Is this true should i just bolt and go or would a thin layer of rtv be a good idea?? thanks

use a layer of good quality rtv. the maching on both surfaces is not perfect. normally there would be a gasket.

I forgot to mention there is a gasket, just in their instructions they make no mention of rtv is all.....

I have the cover and used a thin coat of ultra black on each side of the gasket. I'm not surprised TA doesn't mention it in the instructions. My guess is it is understood when installing any rear cover.

When I was racing I only used the sealant on one side...BUT the gaskets back then were thick. Now they use paper thin garbage. We go into the rear diff quite often so a thin coat of grease was used on the gasket to housing surface. gasket to cover was sealed.

Same with the valve covers gaskets sealant on the valve cover to gasket and the gasket to head was only grease. Always checking the solid lift cam backlash specs.

Good luck. Normally I would say just goop it and you can not go wrong. :) Jim
