Hey Folks just checking out another post talking about cams, gears, switch pitch trannys and got me thinking. I just bought a Ta212 cam for my boattail, stock tranny, (Will be soon enough) 2.93 posi. Do-able? Or am I going to have to look at an SP?

Hey Trevor.Still working that issue eh!! I believe the TA212 is o.k with a fairly stock engine and stock stall.Probably the max you could go.Check with TA.

My friend 'Eggs' has a 212 in his 69 sportwagon 400. It also has a switch pitch, I think the high stall is 4000 or something (he originally bought it for the race car). With 3.42 gears he runs 14.20's or something close. Not bad for a 4500 lb car.

Thanks guys. This project is still about a year down the road (next winter project) Just want to get everything straight in my head well before I do it.

Trevor,I have always been a big "Sleeper" fan.IMHO that car would be soooo nice as one!! Pick and match the right parts,a little stealth painting and your good to go!! :TU:

With a 2.93 rear the TA 212 is "do-able", but might not be the best performing camshaft on the street with a heavy car like the Riv. I would think the TA 112 would be a better deal (on the street) with a 2.93 rear and stock TH-400. But if you want a slight "lope" at idle and slow cruising speeds, then go with TA 212.

Not a apples to apples comparison but years ago my friend and I tested (on a 4,700+ 1971 Riv) a cam similar to the TA 212 (KB Mark 2) with a 2.93 rear, and a smaller cam similar the the TA 112 (KB Mark 1H) with a 3.42 rear. The 3.42 combo won hands down in 0 to 60 MPH and then some, and idled pretty smooth. I'm sure a switch pitch might have help the 2.93 combo, but with the 3.42 combo it was a non issue, as tire traction off the line was already becoming an issue. Both the 2.93 and 3.42 rear were posi units.

The point to the lesson, is that a bigger sounding cam does not always make for a faster car, especially with a heavy Riv. It's the final combo that counts.

Thanks for the info Tommy. I'm getting the 212 off of Jim Walker for a good price, and is part of my long term plans. After the cam it's headers and exhaust, then it's head work. <- That makes it sound easy, but I'm looking at about 5 years I think. So the final combo could work well, but it'll be years before I get there.
