    Hi,

I'm looking for a TH400 for my '71 Skylark Convert (recent 455 transplant). A friend has a long shaft TH400 for sale; can the long shaft be changed out? If so, is this an exotic mutant-creating surgery, or is it pretty common? What parts would be required, and any idea on rough costs for the parts?

    Thanks,

    Jay

Jay I did this about 15 years ago. I knew nothing about transmissions. I got lucky. It actually worked. I'm pretty sure I only things I changed were the output shaft & the tail housing. But I had to take everything out of the case to get to it. If I did it again I would buy a video to learn how to properly disassemble & assemble the th400. While you're at it you could put in a heavy duty sprag which is said to be the weak link and a shift kit.
A word of caution: Don't take the front pump apart unless you assemble it using aligning dowel pins. If you don't you will ruin the front pump. You don't have to take it apart to take it out of the case.
Like I said I think I got lucky. Loads of Luck.......Ray

The trans does require complete dissassembly. The out put shaft and the tail housing need to be changed. Parts can run around $25 for the output shaft and $10 to $20 for the tail housing. SOmetimes you can find the parts cheaper. Often you can buy a complete core tranny for $25. Jim burek
