switch pitch

Discussion in ''Da Nailhead' started by shawn/est.1976, Feb 5, 2009.

  1. Im in need of a complete set up for my switch pitch and kick down harness and switches. I put a 66 nailhead and 400 in my 63 lesabre, but it was missing the controls for the trans. I went over how it works with doc on the phone last night and think i could make it myself ,but why reinvent the wheel. Does anyone have a complete set up for sale or have a parts list of a home made set up? or can you still get all of it new?

Or you could use the non-original but MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE electronic switch-pitch controller sold by Bruce Roe.

Roe is (I think) a semi-retired electrical engineer who has embraced the Switch-Pitch transmission.

His controller is adjustable via electronic timers to provide a much more sophisticated control of the converter than the OEM on/off/on switch.

It's housed in a small plastic box that can be installed under the dashboard. Mine is held in place with a couple of tyraps--it's that lightweight. It senses throttle position, brake pedal position, and manifold vacuum (engine load) to determine the best stall speed (high or low) under all operating conditions--as adjusted and "fine tuned" for YOUR vehicle and the way YOU use that vehicle.

It includes a "drag race" mode; as well as an optional "sustained high-speed" mode that'd be helpful for extremely heavy vehicles--or--racing at the Salt Flats. (Most folks don't use the "sustained high-speed" setting!)

For a little extra money, you can add an LED pilot light to indicate whether the converter is in high- or low-stall mode; and a manual switch to override the controller and force high- or low-stall operation. I did not include those in my installation; but I'm considering adding them this summer.

You'll have to contact him for current pricing--I bought mine a couple of years ago; about $160 at that time.

    Tell him I sent you...

Me to!!! Bruce has already replied and sending me more info. Does anyone else have experience using one of his controllers? This shure makes a whole lot more sense to me than the factory switch set-up or adding a timer to the brake light switch. I can see how this should work better, or I should say, "more as it should".

I have one of Bruce Roe's control/timing boxes. It is great, but too much for what I intended to utilize the SP for. I belive poston or PAE (Ithink Poston) sell a timer as well that is less sophisticated.

I have had some recent correspondence with Bruce about his controller. With his permission I have attached some photos of what it (now the old style) looks like, and the logic diagram. Here are some exerpts with some new information:

I just did a redesign (physical only) to streamline the
unit some. Puts the vacuum switch inside, so it can
benefit from the protection. This vacuum switch is
adjustable, as are the timers. Haven't delivered one yet.

The OEM setup has no torque sensing or timers. It only
works at idle & full throttle. The controller makes a
driveability improvement for everything in between as well.

The SWP controller does the most for heavy or less
powerful vehicles. But it might solve some problems
for you too. Let me know, maybe a different connection
will do it for you. Otherwise, it is satisfaction or I'll buy
    it back.

THIS REPLACES MECHANICAL SWITCHES, AND IS A LOT MORE RELIABLE TOO
    [IMG]
6 INTEGRATED CIRCUITS AND A VACUUM SWITCH FAR OUTPERFORM THE MECHANICAL CONTROLS USED DECADES EARLIER
    [IMG]
Time delays, brake, throttle, and torque sensing are used to improve smoothness & drivability, unlike the crude factory system that only works for idle and full throttle situations.

My understanding is that you still need the kickdown switch to run the trans, but this controller only needs to hook up to the 2 wires on the throttle switch.

Yac- What is "too much"? Is it that it is too complex to "tune" with the timers etc? Did you ever get yours working right?

Erik. Mine works great but I found the vacuum feature to be too much Ana unnecessary
All I wanted was 3 seconds of high stall after releasing the brake didn't need any more than that
