I got a switch pitch trans out of and old olds that sat in my grandmas back yard for years to put behind the 455 i am building for my 70 custom. of corse it was a long tail shaft so first we just tried to change the whole housing because the tailshaft bolts broke off of the switch pitch. when we went to put the pump into the new housing we realized that the pump had and extra bolt hole. So we then took it all apart and put it back in the other housing. now my question is about the speedometer cable. the transmission is cast with the hole for it filled in. but it is cast like a reg trans just minus the bolt hole and the main spedo gear hole. it looks to me like i could just take a hole saw and drill through it and then drill and tap a bolt hole. If not im wondering if i could run my spedo off the front wheel like the olds was. This is the only thing stopping me from finishing up this project and putting it in the car. Let me know how everyone else gets around the problem. Thanks

That was an Olds-only speed reading feature (LF wheel). You best bet is to get a case with the speedo cable on the side.

Is the extra bolt hole in the pump just a switch pitch feature or just the older style th 400. I know they changed the filter and i think the pan did they change the number of bolt holes in the pump too. If so it would be a lot easier to find a reg. housing and put the sp internals into it. I know where there are a few sp's at but theyd be extremely hard to get out especilly right now with all the snakes that are there.

It's not just a simple matter of using a hole saw to make the speedo hole. It needs to be machined. I have that done out here on occasion when I run low on cases. The pump bolt hole problem is that the 400's used both 8 bolt pumps and in the later years also used 6 bolt pumps.
Most of the 6 bolt cases don't have the material inside to pu t the orifaced plug in the case, on those we have to modify the pump for the oil signal that used to come from that irifaced hole. Jim Burek
