Im finally getting to work on my Buick, have a set of headers coming in, and next on my list is new gearing for the car looking for 3.08 or 3.23 unless anyone else has other recomendations. Im building a street and strip car and don't have to have all original stuff. Im also on a budget and am looking to save some money. So if anyone can point me in the right direction on what my options are i would appreciate it. I dont know to much about this so if anyone can give me some insight as to what i can use to swap out (gm parts from junk yard) what to look out for or changing the entire end.
What rear is in the car? Should be an 8.5 10 bolt if you have the original rear from 71 or 72 Skylark/GS. Go to your profile and make a signature that describes your car. That way, it comes up every time you post, like in my post. That way, we know what you have.
Last I looked, Ken at Everyday Performance had an 8.5 with posi and 3.73 gears, rebuilt for around $850.00. Not bad when you consider the price of gears, an install kit, and labor. Of course if you can do it yourself you can save some.
Im mostly looking for info on what options are available for my skylark, can i use any A-body differentials, what cars should i be on the look out for at the junk yard, what are some rear ends that i can swap in easily, and be budget minded! lol
If the rear in your car is original, it should be the 8.5 10 bolt. That's a good strong rear, and parts are readily available. You don't need to swap the whole rear. Just buy a posi and the gears you want. You can buy everything right out of a Jegs or Summit catalog, but I think board member Monzaz could give you a better deal. You could even get what you need in a bone yard. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/posi.htm http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/85rear.htm You should verify that you have an 8.5 http://www.jdrace.com/diff_id/10b85.htm
