Yea but his doesnt have a q-jet, not even my 66 gran sport motor came with a q-jet only a few did. So no worries about destroying a good piece.

Just use the oil pan, pickup, ex manifolds and engine mounts from the GS.
.....and don't to forget to paint the donor 401 RED!!!

The Skylark GS does have a ST300 trans. It's beefed up for use behind the 401.
The 65-66 401 from a big car will have the switch-pitch ST400 trans. To install the st400 into your GS, you'll have to make up some brackets to mount the trans crossmember, put a shorter driveshaft in it, and modify the GS's floor shifter to work with the 3 speed AND modify it to clear the trans under the floor.
The GS's st300 trans also uses a smaller torque converter with a higher stall speed than the big series cars. You can use it on the st400 trans.

o dont worry it will be red. im pretty sure im just going to use the st300. i dont want to do all the changes if i dont have to. i know my luck though by me just putting the motor in the trans is bound to drive about a mile and take a dump.

thank you everybody for your input and ideas. thats why i love this board so much. lots of great people.:beer. now i do have to say, this car is my mothers and she agreed to keep it all oringinal except for the color. instead of the white on white on white, she wants the car candy purple to match the bike that i did for her last year. its a pretty cool color for purple, but its still purple. will still have the white interior and top. she even wants to keep the spoke hupcaps even though i want to put chrome rallys on it. but she bought it and shes paying for me to redo it so such is life.not sure how the red 401 is gonna look in a purple car but hey.

Walt is right on, but don't forget the PITA having to shorten the rear Ebrake cables to fit the new trans crossmember location, and the different sized cooling line fittings if you stick the ST400 in it. Been there, done that, and won't do it again! I would keep the ST300 in it, swap pan and pickup and exhaust manifolds only. Less work, fewer headaches, and easier to swap out when the original mill is done. Trust us....Dan

Hmmm, I solved the ebrake cable problem by just spacing the pivot points further apart......simple and easy....
