What was the correct color for the end link sleeves that attach between the sway bar and the lower control arm on a 70 GS. Most replacements are now gold. Using the following GSX link and pics as a guide what are the correct finishes for the nut and bolt heads on the front suspension --black , silver or gold? file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/jim/My%20Documents/fidelity2002.xls
I believe the sleves were either silver zinc or galvanized. Deffinitely not gold. No clue on the bolts
Jim, I can't access the file you specified...it's on your computer???? But anyway, I'm guessing they were just bare metal. My second choice would be a grey phosphate..... My originals were rusty, and I couldn't find any traces of an original finish on them.... Was there any hardware on the 70's that was gold-cad/zinc? (other than brake boosters and hood latches) Most of my '66 hardware was black oxide, or bare, as far as I could tell...
That is my sense too. All the new sleeves you get are gold color. So are most grade 8 hardware pieces. I too could not get a feel for the original color from the old pieces.
I still haven't settled on a process for that particular 'bare metal' look. For cast iron, I love Eastwood's 'cast iron' powdercoat. For hardware, I use either black oxide or zinc plating (using kits from Caswell plating). I just tied POR-15's 'Metal Mask' paint on my rear and front swaybar (looks nice,BTW)....and I'll use it on the steering linkage as well. But some pieces have a bare-metal look that is like the finish on new angle-iron....just a dark finish.....I'm thinking grey phosphate may be the closest match....now if I could only do that at home! Ideas???
Ahhhhh...yes!.....Eastwood has a spray can for everything! (your complete source for auto-restoration-in a spray-can!)  Good thing they offer 'spray can trigger handles' ....to 'cure aerosol finger fatigue'!!! ou: http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/pr...mType=PRODUCT&iProductID=414&itemType=PRODUCT But thanks for the tip Jim!....Actually, I think their 'cast-iron' powdercoat might give a comparable (and more durable) finish.
Jim, I found this pic of an NOS end link kit....sleeves look natural, hardware is either grey phosphate or black oxide? PART # 1396612
