Surface prep of metal before etching primer?

    Hey all, while I am attacking little welding projects here and there..I am at thepoint where I want to cover these areas up with some primer or paint..
    Since full prime and paint are way off in the future , I just want to protect the areas(patches) I am working on..
    So I was thinking etching primer in a spray can and hit it with enamel or something ..cars are outside..

    So if this is an OK idea, should I be using some "prep-sol" or laquer thinner or something on the bare metal before hitting with primer?

    Local paint shop told a friend that prep sol was just to strip paint of oils and wax before sanding..not to clean bare metal before priming????

    Any ideas?

    Some of the areas will be sanded again someday, some places like the floors and trunk wont..
    ANy help would be greatly appreciated..

    I have been doing a lot of bare metal prep and using laquer thinner and then a dry rage.

    If you are really anal you can also go over the metal with a tack cloth.:Smarty:

    BUICKRAT Got any treats?

    Be careful of tack cloths. Some of them have a sort of wax in them to remove particles but can leave a waxy residue that the primer will not stick to. Sorry, I still reccommend the prep all. Never before have my projects come out better, paint sticks, no fish-eyes, no peeling etc...

    I picked up a little laquer thinner today with some other stuff, the local shop highly recomended the "Prep All" before even getting to the bare metal, but said that since I am already there use the laquer thinner, but cautioned that she believed the laquer thinner dries fast and may not clean as well and may leave a film..

    Thats what they carried and I ended up with it..Klean Strip brand "Prep All" in the spray can..

    I have seen this recomended as well..I guess I am not sure of the idea..
    This would be in place of an etching primer maybe, then use a regular primer?

    Also ended up with a couple cans of SW etching, some undercoat, and SEM copper weld thru primer..again, what they had..
    Between that a couple cans of spray paint and some laquer thinner, i'm busted ..lol

    Have enogh to keep me busy for a while..

    Well, that is how I am using it. I did a 50/50 mix with water and sprayed down a section of the frame with it as an etch after taking it down to bare metal. After about a 1/2 hour I rinsed it with a hose and dried it with an old t-shirt, and then sprayed it with air.

    Then I applied some high build primer. Now I need to sand the primer and add more layers. I am hoping this is enough to fill the pits and lay a good foundation for paint.

    Looks good in the pic..I will be attacking the donor frame hopefully soon..Need to get a couple repair washers done first...May be something to consider..I have some SW ultra fill left over , be enough for the frame lol..
    Especially where I am leaning towards getting away from the POR15..
    I have only had my car sit here in the yard, and not sure I am happy with it..I did the front end of the frame like 2 summers ago and it looks beat..Did spend some time in the sun..But if it needed to be painted over , maybe your method and some paint will be better..leave the POR for the things that are rusty..
    Just learning and curious, what do you plan on painting it with, and how did you clean it up prior?
