I was driving home with my freind for dinner the other night when another of my freinds in a 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee limited somthing pulled along side me at about 45 mph. A quick nod and we went at it. Now I've beat 5.0's, new SS camaros (think the driver sucked),and even kept up with some new mach 1's (never been beaten by an import yet) but I was not prepared for that jeep. I walked away from him pretty well (about 10-15 car lengths at 100mph) but wow that thing kept up better than most muscle/sports cars I've raced. I wasnt sure but I think he said it was a 5.8 and he uses it to offroad on the weekends with no mods. All I can say is I have some seriouse respect for those Jeeps now. It's faster than the new titan 5.6's which I'v had the pleasure of beating. If I had to compare it to anything I'd say it pulled as well as the new hemi dodge. By the way I killed one of those too :Brow: Pretty proud of that. Not shure if it was a hemi though, but it was sorta shorter and had silver racing stripes. sounded beafy, and put up a good fight so I assumed thats what it was (do they put racing stripes on the regular 1500's from the factory? forgive me for my gloatting it was just a 1500). Anyway watch out for those jeeps.

This was in my 67 riv with a 430, RV cam, headers, 3in exhaust cut b4 axle with flowmaster super 40's, MSD, Perf intake, and a whole bunch of new stuff. No posi makes me sad though.

I used to drive a 91 Jeep, It wasn't slow. Sure it was cold, had a rough ride and was top heavy, but it wasn't slow.

Chrysler is stepping up. Their 300 runs a 1/4 in the low 14's stock. Thats not bad for a big luxary car.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited's had Dodge/Chrysler/Mopar 5.8 (360 c.i.) v-8 i them in the 90's. This is the same motor that could be found in Durangos, Dakota R/T, and full size dodge pickups. The only differance is that the Dakota R/T had a bigger cam and different computer programming.

Quite a bit of them are not much on take off though. I beat a 4.0 Jeep a few weeks back for two stop lights, so that means two take offs, my car is all stock w/ a sluggish 3.8 odd fire V6. :Do No: Most of them can be modded for good speed but a few of the newer ones w/ the 4.0 ain't much on take off stock.

Those jeeps are suprisingly quick but they're like tin cans on wagon wheels.

I'm gonna be lookin' for one of those now :Brow: ......no way a Jeep is gonna be quicker than a Buick with a SP and 465 ft. lbs of torque making it go. Maybe he had a chip in it or something? I've beaten newer Corvettes with mine (barely), so to say a Jeep was a tough kill is like saying it's as fast as a Corvette.......I don't think so. Glad you beat it anyway. :bglasses:

The 5.9s (360) in the Jeeps are a little different than the ones in the trucks. They have electric fans and I belive different timing. They are good for an honest 14.8 at the strip stock.

Those 5.9 jeep grand cherokees are no slouch. My parents had one and I've beaten some mustangs with it (light to light). I now have a 4.0L 6 cyl cherokee and its pretty good off the line. I love jeeps, I've taken them everywhere and I've never gotten stuck. I bought my cherokee for 2900. It's a 1997 with 96K when I bought it. It uses no oil and leaks nothing. I've had great experiences with jeeps.

If a classic car is geared low, no worries about tailgaiting from many cars :Brow:

Now the 5.9 jeeps are a different story. The 4.0 I beat sounded like it had a stick shift in it, as there was hesitation between shifts and he chirped the tires in second, but my automatic smoothly shifted through the gears and I beat him from light to light at those two stop lights. Not saying the manual tranny is why I won, but I noticed the hesitation between shifts and I know a/t do not do that. He kept up pretty good but I still clearly won the stop light to stop light races, and this was quite a while ago, the bands are going bad in my tranny now. At the time though, I did keep close to a car length ahead of him :3gears:

Eric, that would be a 5.9. I have one in my 2002 Durango. I think they shoehorned it into the Jeeps as well. Plus the Jeeps are lighter. I also had a 5.9 in my 99 Durango. Even the Durango has great highway pull with that engine. The Jeeps are much lighter I'm sure.

With the 99, I could tow the Buick up highway grades at 70mph in overdrive with the A/C & cruise control on and it never kicked into 3rd.

In 2002, they changed the tranny, the shiftpoints, everything. Wish I kept my 99.

Whoops, Your right my bad. Wish I could have gotten the 5.9 in my 99 Dakota but it wasn't offered by the factory in 4x4's

I almost bought a 2001 I test drove. It had a 4.7 V8 (I forget what they called it - Powertech I think) with a 5 speed auto. It was no 455 or anything, but for a 4x4 I was REAL impressed with what it had.

Ken is right, it is the 5.9, I (actually my wife) also have it in our 2002 Durango R/T. Before that we had a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition (different than the limited) 5.9. IIRC, only could get the 5.9 in 98. They only came in Silver, Black and White (different "Jeep" names, but those were the colors). You can identify by the color, and they also have the 5.9 on the doors, fake air vents on the hood, body cladding the same color as the car, and a slightly larger exhaust. They were the quickest SUV made in 98, and went 0-60 in under 7 seconds, not bad for what it was. We get rid of it because we needed a third row seat, and my wife still wishes she had it. It sure was built better than the Durango.
