    Supercharging a 3.8 Reatta

Buddy has a 89 Reatta with a 3.8 V-6, he was thinking of supercharging it with a kit from a late model Buick. Will his 3.8 need any modifications or will the supercharger bolt right on? What other parts will we need besides the intake, brackets, and pulleys.

    He means Reatta -

Bruce, you're at 1830 posts and NOW you're a comedian???

I don't know the answer for you on the Reatta. I've been thinking about an sc3800 swap for a while and the best information I've found has been on some of the websites dedicated to swaps into Pontiac Fieros.

I'm pretty sure you would need the PCM from the later model donor car matching the supercharger stuff. There are major differences between the three generations of sc3800 motors - series I 1989-1995, series II 1995-about 2000, and series III from 2000 or so to now. I don't know the interchangeability and I'm not sure who on this site can 'splain it to you.

If somebody does know, I'm sure they will step up -

if the series I 3800 motor is anything like the series II N/A (L36), it's best to swap to a whole L67 motor (series II 3800 supercharged), lower compression is one reason...but i'm not sure of the others. I'll post this question over on my Regal board, many have done an L36 to L67 swap over there.

    Louie,

It is possible to install the Series I (Vin L) Supercharger onto the Vin C engine. I think it would be simpler to swap the L heads onto the C block, but it has been done with the factory C heads.

There was a guy on the BCA Reatta Forum that did just that, he swapped the SC intake onto his Vin C headed engine. You can see the lengthy thread here.

Ryan from www.gmtuners.com was a huge help in getting the chip burned to the stock ECM to make it all run. Seems like a good guy and is reasonably priced too. :bglasses:

I would also highly recommend checking out the LeSabre T-Type Forum - as those were mostly Vin C powered cars too.

*I have a complete Series I L67 Supercharged intake assembly for sale($300). You can find it in the for sale sections on this board and the above LeSabre T-Type forum.

You would also need the tensioner/pulleys & bracket.....that is available also ($45). In addition, the balancer from the SC engine would be needed, as it has 2 sections of grooves for the 2 belts.

Let me know if he'd be interested.

    There are 4 pics here.

    Thanks Scott
I will pass the information to him and let you know if he is interested. He just picked up a 3rd Reatta (parts car) so he is going to do the swap.

I'm located in Wappingers Falls, NY about 10 minutes south of Poughkeepsie. Riviera's clearcoat is starting to peel, That is Goffer "Go fer milk, go fer cigarettes" It's better to drive that then the SUV.

Here's a thread on the BCA forum where a guy details supercharging his Reatta. It is a super long thread, but in the end he gets it running good.

    Re: Supercharging a 3.8 Reatta

A bolt on kit may not be the way to go. There are Riv's and Park Ave with factory supercharged motors in salvage yards.
A '91 Reatta would be Ideal it has the same PCM as a Park Ave or Riv and the SC trans can be used.
    I put a '94 series 1 super charged 3800 in a '88 Reatta and it ran 15.2 in the 1/4.
'89 the swap would be a little easier because the engine harness is on the correct side for the SC Motor.
