Let's not forget how horrible winter was. This is the season to be working on our Buicks. I know it's hot, but suck it up buttercup. Dont let this one pass you by, me included. BREAK!
Just wrapping up a motor swap on a 72 GS-350. At 11 pm tonight I took it for a short test drive. No headlights. I did a burnout.
And remember guys. Dont be scared of the heat during the day. You'll need: *Big jug of water with alot of ice in it. Insulate preferably. If outside. *hat *longsleve * a chair in the shade *music/talk radio *a 2 minute break every 40min little by little, visually plan what's next, listen to your body but dont quit.
When I was 25-30 I could work outside sunup to sundown here in Florida by working smart. Now I'm 66 and there is no smart plan that allows that anymore. I have 6 acres and horses so there is always something to clean up or clear with no winter downtime of stuff growing. Cut 3 acres of hay, trimmed three trees and hauled away six pickup truck loads piled very high of cuttings in 8 hours but man I was toast. Even with hydration and 10 minutes food breaks I was completely out of gas. Took a cool shower and a nap then went out and fixed a couple of fence posts when the sun got behind the trees. Slept good last night though. Mikey
I'm 74 and much of the above is true for me as well. Cut some grass today, and I'm still cleaning up after Irma (direct hit). Temp in the mid 90's and humidity at about 95%. I could work in about 40 minute increments. Still better then wintah in New England, though.
Ronnie , aren’t you a Cal guy? How would you know about winter? Come east and try some Humid heat. It’s far different than that desert heat you guys get. I am out working in the heat all day. When I come home I take a 13 mile bicycle ride then work in the yard a while. It takes lots of water intake.
Well when I was a boy a walked 15miles in the snow with one shoe just to kick ass. Then I would walk back another 15miles back home just to churn butter.jk But seriously come to my side and do what I do and I'll bet Ill earn your respect. I will not for one second say it's easy here in this desert. The elevation is up at 3k, the air is dry and sucks thelife out you, the sun is strong and their is no shade, the wind come at 40mph some time(shoot everyday),,, it gets hot at 8pm and dont cool down till 7. And winter sucks it freezes my dogs water bucket every night then add the wind that dont stop all year(wind chill). You would hop on your bike and the wind will blow your ass back to go like the monopoly game. Or a sand tornado or a big gust of sand will rock you. There is a reason only coyotes, crows and snakes only live around here. I've been in humid heat and it's not easy either but it ain't harder. Yesterday I was driving home with my fam and I seen a guy layed out on his bike with a bloody nose. It was 6pm, i stopped and he was unconscious. I yelled at him and he woke, he might a been a drunk but the moral of the story is this desert is no joke. And many places in California are not easy to live in like the mountains and up north Sacramento snows alot. It ain't all like 90210.
Ronnie, Massachusetts is the windiest state. Look up the top 100 windiest cities in US and see how many are in Mass. a huge number. Almost always the top city is here and many in top 10. I ride into the wind constantly. Trust me I have seen the worst there is. I have even been out on my bike when blizzards started.
The above little-known tidbit is true. Even most Massholes don't realize it. I got my basic flight instruction at a little country North-South airstrip in Norfolk, MA. The prevailing fair-weather wind is from the West. Trust me - crosswinds were second nature to me.
Speaking of wind, this link is a very cool global map of active winds. I keep an eye on it when planning fishing trips to the Gulf. https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-83.72,30.56,774
Dang it I cant win with you. But when your right your right and when your wrong your wrong. And I was wrong about you, sorry. You sound like one strong dude and the exact kind of people I like in my life even tho its indirectly.
Thanks Ronnie, it’s just 60 years of knowledge And working out. You will catch up I am sure. You just need to keep pushing yourself.
