Stupid question, but is my 401 supposed to have a dipstick tube? Or is the dipstick in there the correct way now right into the block?

    Thanks,
    Artie

The dipstick goes straight into the block and is held snug by a rubber grommet on the stick. BTW, the '65-66 GS Skylark dipstick is special, due to the unique oil pan...pn#1372785. Dan

Artie just curious, how many quarts does your dipstick say should fill your engine?

I know where you're going with that one Doug. someone here said that we all have the wrong sticks installed , if it reads one quart high with 5 qts (total).

OK Frank stop reading my mind, it could be dangerous:sleep: When I changed the oil for the first time this surfaced so I checked the PN and it checked out fine which really confused me.
So I measured how much oil was taken out and put 5 quarts back in.:TU:
My next question would be which side does your air cleaner intake point to, drivers side or pass side and does it have AC?

Wate? so a 425 should take 5 quarts not 4?

My dipstick says engine capacity 4 quarts. All my service documentation says 4 Qts without filter, add 1 quart for new filter.

You got it, 4 in the pan + 1 in the filter. 5 total

Someone once posted...I believe on the yahoo board, that the GS rear sump oil pan can actually hold an extra quart....and still maintain the same level as the mid sump pan. But buick ran the lower level to keep the oil away from the crank for a hp gain....
This would explain the different dipsticks. Now, can anyone confirm that the wrong dipstick in a GS would require that extra quart?

I could do a test on this with the pans here. That would be good info to keep handy. I will see this weekend about testing the pan and dipstick.
