    Blinker Question.

This is a really juvenile question, but you guys are the only ones who will know. I have a 72 skylark custom. well when I got it, the front side markers and front running lights didn't work, so I recently rewired them and got them working. The problem is, some times they alternate (front blinker, then side marker) and some times they blink in unison (front blinker and side marker together). Well seeing as how They didn't work at all when I got the car I don't know what's right. and I don't know why it changes. I just put in a new flasher so I know that's good. The only thing I can think of is a bad ground? but they check out okay. Any help would be great!

    Thanks, Garth

I think you are experiencing the correct operation of these lights. The difference depends on whether the marker lights are on with the parking lights. If the parking lights are on, they will alternate. If the parking lights are off, they will illuminate together. Ray

Thanks Ray, You were right! :Dou: But I did have a bad ground after all, on the driver side, that was causing the alternation it to be sporadic. Thanks Again Ray for filling me in!

front side marker lights dont have a direct ground. the two wires for them come from the parking light and blinker wires.
when the parking lights are on, the side markers light because they are powered by the parking light wire and "finding" ground throught the (off) blinker filiment in the front light. at that same time if you were to use your blinker, everytime your blinker bulb would flash your side marker would go out because both of the side markers wires would have equal voltage present, halting the flow of current through the side markers filiment for the moment of flash.
thats what makes the side and front flash alternatley. :beer

now lets pretend that you are not using the parking lights.
everytime the front blinker flashes the side marker will flash with it because voltage is going up the side marker wire from the blinker and "finding" ground through the (off) parking light filiment on the front bulb.
thats what makes the side and front flash together. :)

although the color of blinker wire varies from side to side. here is a little picture i made that shows how it is wired.

early cars that had side marker lights werent wired this way... i think 69 or 70 was the first year for GM to use it ... if anyone knows for sure, please chime in.

if everyone would drive 74 (or 75) LeSabres, they wouldnt need that extra side marker fixture because the LeSabre's front and rear lights wrap around each corner of the car.

what other years/models of GM cars have lights that wrap around the front AND rear corners. :Smarty:
