Find your answers here: http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/sdcforum.asp 45 Years ago I had a 56 Stude Champion. Lots of these cars like mine had the Borg Warner Overdrive Transmission so these cars could run high numerical ratios.
Thanks Jim. I know my dad use to haul the family around in 56 or 58 Chieftains, I remember they had a hell of a top end for the day. They never lacked for power. Thanks again Wil
Chiefton was a Pontiac model as I recall. I remember the lighted glass emblem in the nose emblem at night was an erie sight. A little known fact is that the late 40s and early 50s futuristic styling of Studebaker cars and trucks is attributable to the later, great designer of Chrystler big fin cars, Virgil "Ex" Exner.
Jim you were right, looking up family photos and paper work, my dad had two 50s models Commander or Champion, The photos show the bullet nose center grill with chrome going out on each side of that. Thanks for the memory jog. Wil
My grandfather had a bullet nose Studebaker. The inspiration for this design was the Lockheed Brothers P38 Lightning twin engine WWII fighter designed by the late, great kelly Johnson who later designed the Blackbird. But Virgil Exner was the designer of the Bullet nose while under contract to Studebaker through the Raymond Lowey Studios.
If there are specific parts you need try Newman & Altman in South Bend. They are located in one of the old Studebaker buildings and Im told they have the biggest stock of NOS in the country. The building is due for demolition and I havent heard what will become of everything
