This strange looking nailhead bellhousing followed me home last weekend.
I can't find any part #'s on it anywhere.
The trans mount flange bolt pattern looks a little weird to me too.
Anyone here familiar with these? :puzzled:

    trans adapter

    Hi,

It looks to me to be an adapter for nailhead to '49 and up Ford transmissions. The way it comes out about 2" from the block and then has a slight lip makes me think it may have been made by Trans-Dapt.

Some of the early Ford four speeds also used this bolt pattern. This is a somewhat popular adapter for hot rodders looking to put a four speed behind their nailhead. Not particularly rare but not a bad piece to have.

It all makes sense to me now.
Now wonder there was a bunch of Ford clutch parts that came with it.
Not to mention an unidentifiable T-10 trans.

    Thanks Joe! :TU:

Could also be for a T10 that was fitted to Rambler, as they were very close to the Ford stuff, but had different bolt patern from case to bellhousing, used Ford clutch parts mostly though.

    Does this help?

    Rambler?? :Dou:
Well Dave, now I'm REALLY confused.
Here's the trans that also followed me home.
I can't seem to figiure out what it's out of.
    It's definately a '62 dated T-10 and has K42 2 stamped in it.
I thought it was an early Ford piece untill I read that last post.
All I know for sure is it's NOT original Buick.
Anyone want to wager a geuss?? :Do No:

When Rambler used cast iron T10's, the trans was virtually same as a Ford, except for one of the trans to bellhousing mounting bolt positions. Could be one of them.

    Rambler???

I suppose the tranny could be from a Rambler but I have never seen a Trans-Dapt adapter for a Rambler...:Do No:

I can't even find a listing in any of my old catalogs for such an adapter.:boring:

If you are really curious about the make, I would check with a Mustang group to see if they can ID the trans for you.

Either way, a T10 with the bellhousing and clutch part to put it behind a nailhead can't suck:beer

That sure looks like a t10 from a falcon or comet. If it is it won't handle the torque of a nailhead. Hell they wouldn't handle the torque of a stock 289 271 horse power. a late 65 to 69 ford top cover box has the same pattern on the trans as the 49 to early 65 trans. You might need the early 65 tc box input housing as the later housing was smaller and may not hold the clutch centered as well.

That was my first thought too, Judd. :beer

Don't worry about me breaking it since I don't plan on using it behind any of MY nailheads.
Since it was practically given to me, I was planning on selling it and I was just looking to be accurate with my descriptions.
I'll probably just sell the trans separately from the bellhousing set-up.
I got pretty much everything but a flywheel in the deal.
Here's a picture of the rest of the stuff that was tossed in with the trans and the bellhousing (everything looks unused, but old).
Everyone feel free to identify any of it if you can.
    Thanks! :TU:

    bellhousing

:puzzled: Hi Robert, I have the same bellhousing. I bought it a few months ago from Tom Telesco. It appears to be an old Trans dapt unit. Anyways, it adapts an old ford trans pattern to the nailhead. Ford toploader trans from the sixties has a dual trans pattern- one for the old style bellhousings and a larger pattern for the later bells. Just last week I bolted my toploader ford trans to the bell and it fits perfect, however, I did have a machinist bore the registering hole for the bearing retainer on my trans was about 1/8" larger than the t-10. If you ever plan on putting it behind a nailhead, the toploader is one tuff trans. The infamous Sox & Martin drag team used one behind their race hemi's, because they kept breaking the hemi crashbox.

    I hope this helps.
