Well... In preperation for this years hurricane season, I got a generator from some company event so I'm set there. But I got to thinking, last year everybody was in a panic to buy gas... Lines were in excess of 2hrs wait, and I don't want to be doing that every other day. And I'd like an alternative for having 10 5gal. jugs sitting around (like I've seen around hear from last year..lol) So I was thinking that I could get a 55gal. drum (with a sealed lid)and just store it in my garage to use in case I need it. But I'd like to know if there are any problems with my thinking, or perhaps better Ideas.... I would like to keep this "budget", but as safe as possible. Any thoughts??? TIA :TU:
Not a bad idea!! I've never tried it before. Any old gas that I have usually winds up in the woods hoopie (351M's love old gas). I know I've read something about Richard Lasseter storing his race gas. I'll have to dig through my old issues of the GSXtra.
You could always treat the gas with Stabil, you know the stuff they sell in parts stores meant to prevent gas from going stale. A sealed drum stored in a cool place should keep. If you transfer it into smaller containers to use, and treat the gas, you should be fine.
If he's got luck like mine, the drum will have a pinhole in it and the thing will be empty when he needs it ou:
I'll second that. How about keeping your car fuel tanks on the full mark, and siphoning out what you need... If you have 3 cars, you could potentially have up to 60 gallons of much safer storage capacity. Including the 5 10gallon plastic jugs, that's close to 100 gallons to get you thru.
That's my main concern.... I'm wondering exactly how "sealed" a sealed container is... The gas going bad doesn't concern me too much as I'd just use it for the cars after the season was through...... Forgive me, but I don't see how having 5 10gal. containers in the same area is any different than one big container o No: Only have two cars... and I'd want to keep those tanks full for road use.... Stations were emptied here about 10hrs after refilling... gas was a major PIA to obtain for 6wks. after we got hit. My dad drove to every station for 2 hrs (one way) to find gas 3wks after Charlie :spank: That's another reason I'd like to have "extra" around..... Oh... and Chris... I won't be putting any Acetone in anymore gas   Thanks guys, Keep 'em comming :TU:
Look at it this way, if there was an accident, and god forbid- a fire, would you rather deal with 55 gallons, or 10? Sure, both are gonna take out your house, and everything in it,,, but 10 gallons going up at once gives you an opportunity to run away. 55 gallons would probably take out your house and every house around yours instantly.
Don't carry all your eggs in one basket. I'd get a bunch of little cans. #1, easier to get out of the can. #2, IF it leaks, you ain't out $100 or more.
Throw the stabil in there the day you get the gas, it doesn't work too well if you wait a couple of weeks before adding it.
