Hey guys, I have 2 questions for you. First off, I recently swapped in a pretty much bone stock 72 455 non-stage motor into my 67 special. I havent swapped over hardly any of the go-fast goodies from my previous 455 (which seized up due to oil pump failure), and so I was wondering if anyone has handy, or knows where I can get the stock HP and Torque ratings for a stock 72 455. The only thing I have changed it from non-stock is I swapped on the intake off my old engine. Heres where the second question comes in. Its an aluminum piece, with no outward identifying marks (no casting numbers, no company names, etc.) I know its not a TA SP-1, and Im pretty sure its not an edelbrock performer, but beyond that I have no idea. It is polished aluminum, so I think maybe it was originally just regular aluminum, and when the previous owner polished it, he ground off any names/numbers that might have been there. When I had it off the old motor, I noticed a few number/letters stamped into the underside of it. I cant recall exactly what they are, but I have some pictures laying around here somewhere I could find, or post maybe. Any clue what it might be? Any way to find out for sure? Its not a stock appearing one, more of a high-rise than the performer, but doesnt look as drastic as the pictures Ive seen of SP-1s. I think its a dual plane, but dont know for sure (never took the carb off). If anyone can help on either of these questions, Id appreciate it.
Try www.hu.mtv.edu/~ddcronkh/ It's called The Buick Gran Sport page, I think. Click on the year at the top and scroll down to 455 non- stage 1. It says it was a 8.5:1 comp. motor, putting out 225 hp by the new formula in effect that year. Could the manifold be a Edlebrock B4B or a Kenny Belle? Poston looks more like a single plane, so that's probably not it. B4B looks a lot like the stock unit and is clearly a dual plane. Carb is supposed to be moved back an inch from stock. Couldn't tell it from mine when I got the car though, as the stock dual snorkle matched up with the hood air inlets using the B4B. Weird. Hope this helps, Jack.
heres some pics Well, I'm gonna try and post some pics of my intake in the hopes that it'll help someone out tehre identify it! Heres one of the whole thing, with teh carb still on it
Here is a casting number stamped into the underside of the intake, near the front end, if I remember correctly
the next 2 are pictures of 2 letters stamped into the intake, near the casting number shown above. they appear to be the letters "N" and "D"
It's the newer 2146 Edelbrock Performer and not the older B4B intake. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/man_buick.html The number is listed on that page.
The B4B carb pad was relocated about an 1" FORWARD from the stock location. It will not work with the stock dual snorkle setup. The newer Performer matches the stock carb pad location (front to back), but is slightly higher. This one will work with the stock dual snorkle setup Jack, are you sure you have a B4B?
Tommieboy, I'm an idiot. Forward is indeed correct. Yeah, we're pretty sure it's a B4B- proper stampings, etc. I never have measured a stock dual snorkel v mine- mine may well have had the snouts shortened by a previous owner. It fit the hood OK when I bought the car, but it wasn't a perfect match. It now resides in a lg. plastic bag in the garage, along with all the other boxed up old parts.
