Hey guys I have this firewall grommet that is original to my car for the main wiring harness.
It is old and stiff making it hard to work with.

Wondering if anyone has a way to soften up old brittle rubber?
I was thinking maybe scrub it with wd40?

I appreciate any and all help.

3 parts 91% isopropyl alcohol and 1 part wintergreen methyl salicylate. Soak 24 hours.

I wish it was that easy. If a new one was available I would have already bought it.

It's like a lot of other parts for the Y body cars there not reproduced or remade. We just got to make do.

There is a product I use in electronics called Rubber Renue (Spelling is correct, just weird). It is for belts and things on printers, turntables.... but should work for your grommet as well. It is available on Amazon and in some stores.

My local hardware store has a large assortment of grommets. I'll also bet that someone has them online, unless it's something that was manufactured specifically for that car. I would think that GM would have purchased them off-the-shelf, rather then going through the time and expense of having them custom made to GM's specs.

I see your plug has a flat spot..... Why can't you trim-out the flat spot on the firewall and use a standard everyday easy to find grommet?

I can see where "Woody" posting about a stiff rubber could be a problem...sorry Woody, couldn't resist.

If the rubber is still stiff after soaking for more than 4 hours, I'd seek professional attention

I know this is an old thread but I could print one if I had an example to work from.

Try the Steele Rubber catalog. They make a whole lot of obscure rubber parts.

I've already bought every single product that Steele Rubber offers for the 63 skylark.
I wished that they would offer them for sale.
