This is very typical / very common - the goo is the oils exiting the plastic. I find it cleans up pretty well with Simple Green. Expect this stuff for as long as you own the car. Its like the mail; it never stops.

Do not get Simple Green on clear plastic it will cloud it.

I used Shout stain remover and it cut the oil real well. Another one I heard of was Dawn dishwashing detergent.
Like he said, it WILL return, whenever the car sits closed up in the sun the steering wheel usually gets sticky.

Remove the wheel from the hub and the horn button.
Buy some Castrol Super Clean (purple liquid) and use a small stiff brush. You can get both at Autozone. Use a large sink. Spray Super Clean on the wheel, both sides and let soak 4-5 mins. Use the brush and scrub the wheel front and back. Use water to wash the wheel and you will be set.

    George,

Have you ever dyed a steering wheel? I have a brown one and need it to be black. Also I had a local auto body shop dye some interior parts for me(pillar post mouldings and sunvisors. I Tryed to install the pillar posts and had to flex a little bit to get the screw holes to align when the white dye cracked and started to peel off.I gave him the vinyl prep and dye that I bought from yearOne.Did he do it right or does this dyeing interiors sound to good to be true?

    Thanks, Gary Crossman

Yes, the wheel can be dyed. You will have to remove the outer stainless band and this requires some skill. Once you have it clean, I usually beadblast them to prep the surface for dye. Works well !

As for dye peeling, you have to make the surface super super super clean. Otherwise, it will not adhere. Use the surface prep or wipe down with lacquer thinner or RM901 Pre-Kleano or Dupont Prep-Sol

Can you paint the steering wheel with interior flattened Acrylic Enamel??

You can not use paint. You have to use dye.

Thanks for the advise George. I will attempt it unless somebody out there
wants to trade a black 3 spoke for my brown 3 spoke.
