I've got a '71 GS with tilt column that will only lock when the ignition is turned off about once every 10 or 15 times. The rest of the time it will not lock. What's the likely problem? I know there is a plate with notches cut into it under the wheel hub and a rod that pokes thru when the key is turned off. But I can't imagine what could go wrong with that set-up.
Your pop-up spring for the lock pin...which engages the lock plate is broken and/or bent. See my tilt column wobble article on the site below and you will see what I mean. If you need the spring or any other tilt column parts, let me know....have rebuilt over 400 columns and have many many parts for them....thanks! GStage1@BuickPerformanceClub.com
Thanks, George. Is that spring replaceable by just removing the steering wheel and hub or, must I remove the whole column? By the way, I remember meeting you a few years ago at a show over in the Tampa area somewhere. Long time ago.
See this article....picture 17 shows the spring and lock pin. You will have to remove the wheel, hub, lock plate, key cylinder, turn signal mechanism and then slide off the upper collar. http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/tiltsteeringcolumnwobble.htm
