What can I do to reduce slack in the steering gear box in my 70 skylark, are there any adjustments I can make or to I need to rebuild it?

Steering box wear is best handled by a rebuilder. If your front end has not been rebuilt it is most likely an issue.

I forgot tho mention that this is on my 70 Skylark. The front end has been all rebuilt within the last 2 years according to the papers that were in the glove box when I bought the car, new tie rods, ball joints, bushings, etc.

You can trade it in or have yours rebuilt to a fast ratio. What is the guy's name-- Chip?

my '93 Estate Wagon has the same problem. I have been screwign down the set screw 1/4 turn at a time and no improvement. I fear of blowing seals. Any advice and how do I disarm the airbag if I replace thebox

Don't forget to check the "rag-joint". On my truck I had a local frontend shop check for the cause of steering slop and they said it was the bald tires. I did adjust the steering box and then had to undo what I had done. Finally I was moving the steering wheel to see how bad the box might be, and it was the coupler. Two hours and twenty dollars later and problem solved.

That's what I would look at first.
