I am new around here and found many helpful suggestions on this site.So I thought I would register and try my luck. My 65 GS steering has to go!!!So I was looking around and found many close ratio units from a variety of vendors. The only problem is the cost is insane. Now the cost of a 65 chevy box is very reasonable. The difference in price is around: 374.00 for a "Buick" box and 229.00 for a chevy box from NPD. And the chevy box is a little tighter than the buick box. One is 2 3/4 turns and the cheaper chevy box is 2.6 turns lock to lock. Anyone ever do this install. And I have an ss monte box in stock but it isn't flare fittings so forget that. I had enough problems getting the hoses to fit in the compartment with the 455, the pwr steering pump is almost sitting on the box!!! Had to hone out all adjustment holes to get it high enough!!! Thanks
Joe--if you post on "whoa and sway" there are many posts about this--I bought a "Chevelle" box from SS396.com---it was $329 but NO change in fittings, came with a NEW ragjoint--BOLT up and go!! What a difference in my car-- 2.9 turns lock to lock and road feel.:TU: One of the best things I've done for my car. Just rereading your post--you stuffed a 455 into your older 65 so your compartment is a more cramped--I would still think the NEW box would fit. Also another thing the Chevelle box is preset for the proper internal stops--so your TURNING RADIUS does NOT get messed up,some of the bastardized setups with Camaro/Firebird boxes can mess up your turn radius! HTH Pete
Well I appreciate your response Pete. Ok so the reason I brought up the flare fittings is because the ss monte/gn box is not flare. And these replacement boxes are the proper flare for my lines. I had major problems making the hoses work. I actually bought 66 chevelle lines from NPD. I have a friend with a chevelle and looked in his engine bay and saw a nice tight fitting hose and it worked better than the expensive hose I had made up at locol hose shop. Thanks again.Joe. Now you say I can search-"whoa and sway"??
I tried the search and had no luck finding anything. Not to computer orientated. Thanks for the info.
Joe, the procedure to install a Monte Carlo box is on Georges site: http://www.buickperformance.com/page1.htm LOTS of great info there for you!
