I have a 72 riv 455. I am now going on starter #4. The car will start good once in a while then it starts grinding an the head on the starter cracks.
if its grinding you have an alignment problem.first make sure the mounting bolts are knurled so they fit snug in the holes of the housing.flexplate worn/out of round/not tourqed evenly.the only other way a housing breaks is backfire/crossfire during cranking.make sure your plug wires are not touching & you have no carbon tracking in the dist cap.a starter can not generate enough tourque to break itself.i have in one extreme case seen bad main bearings worn so bad you could grab the flexplate & move it up & down/side to side  but it was a ford 460
