Funny thing happened starting the car first time this year..After charging the battery and starting the car, when I went to try the lights, the car shut down . After reading my manual, I figured I blew a fusible link So under I go to remove the starter(it had to be removed anyways, that god awful spinning bendix noise sometimes you hear) to get a better chance to fix the links but cant find a way to remove the top bolt on the startero No: Is threre an easy way?? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx Oh ya, I have a 68' Special,,350
Huh. That's interesting. My 69 Riv only has 2 bolts holding the starter in. Both from the bottom. Where is the top bolt, and is it standard on ther Buicks (350, A-bodies?)?
I also have two bolts from the bottom. But there is one bolt on the top connected to a bracket. I think its there to steady the starter from the turning tourque or to take the stress off the two main bolts. Its just that its in behind the selonoid and very to hard to get at.
When my car did that, it was the actual power cables... story is... http://v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16194
Yeah I went through that too. The little bracket from the starter to the block. Its a real PIA. Keep plenty of band-aids handy. I used an offset ratchet box end wrench. Not much room to work. .
I had the same problem getting to it on my 71. After fighting with it for what seemed like forever i got a long metal cutting blade on my Sawzall and cut it off . You must have the original starter in your car. I know mine was. BTW the new starter did not have a hole to receive the bolt for the bracket? GOOD LUCK
Hey guys,I was talking to a friend of mine at work and he says that the bracket is attached to one of the thru bolts that holds the housing of the starter motor together. Hmmmm. Didnt see any bracket at the back of starter but I will try it. But not right now, Got the wiring problem fixed so the starter is put on the backburner for now.:TU:
Jeff, Last year I had the original starter rebuilt for my '69 Riv 430. There was a bracket on the top of it that bolted to a hole in the block making a total of three bolts holding it on. That top bolt is a true PIA (small wrench, lot's of patience).
That must be what I'm dealing with. Where the heck is it? Best way to get to it? I saved the starter from another car that was parted. There IS a hole in the top of that one. Is that where it goes in? Why on earth does it NEED to be so difficult?
65 Sportwagon with 300 engine and AC I owned many years ago had the same type bracket on the starter. As I recall it was fairly easily accessed from above with a 3/8" drive socket (don't remember the size) on an extra long extension. John :beer
Aha!! I can't really see the starter from above, but reaching around from the bottom and up around just past the solenoid and ... thar she was... not enough room to get a 3/8" up there, but a small 1/4" drive with a 1/2" socket worked. Tough to get leverage on such a small socket, but I did eventually get a good grip... even have a little bit of skin left on the knuckle.
