i was wondering if there is any fix for a starter solonoid that stops working when it gets too hot? after driving my car all day, the starter seemed to not want to click over :af: . mechaninc said it looks like the solenoid was shot, gets to hot and wont work. any suggestions? :Do No:

    lots o options

a lot of guys mount a ford fenderwell s'noid & by-pass the original, looks funky but it works.OR,i can get a top-notch usa made 130 turn(90 stock)solenoid shipped for $40.or a mini would do the trick

You can get solenoids seperately from most any parts store. I Finally bought some reflective wrap for my starter from my local speed shop, I think Summit or Jegs would stock it also.

    starter

My 65 GS has a metal heat shield that is between the exhaust manifold and the starter. But I know what you mean about hot soak problems, I had a 70 stage that left me stranded more times than I could count. :Brow:

    Hot start problems

What most peaple don't know is that the wires that control tha start mode are incredably long , think about it the hot wire is on the starter then crossesthe fire wall to the switch then fromthe switch to the starter s'noid now your power has to travel about 11to15 feet through the wire that is hot from engine heat.See where i am going with this? The by pass or mini starter ( i use both on my cevy LUV with a 455 buick 4spd combo) work very well to over come hot start problems. I am using a permanet magnet starter that work good on its own but i was already set up for the s'noid bypass so i use both, can't hurt as my batterys are by the tail gate.Hope this helps.

    the heat shield works wonders.
u may have a couple of problems - maybe a weak solenoid . most likely the windings on the starter wall (housing) are getting too hot and are failing.
had the same problem on an 81 v8 cutlass. no heat shield on these cars. i went thru 2 starters, in a couple of weeks, until i demanded a starter that had been completely rebuilt with new armature and housing windings. solved the problem. an old retired mechanic gave that solution. a few months later i installed a heat shield.
