So, I'm awaiting for my new radiator to arrive from original auto parts group and wanted to know if I could continue my weekly engine starts of my car? I still have the old rusted radiator, its completely off the car. I don't have the transmission lines contacted to anything. Would my fluid leak if I were to start her up?

Yes, you would have a mixed mess of anti freeze and transmission oil. DON'T start the engine. Leave it alone until the radiator is replaced.

You could connect the lines with a loop of tight fitting push on hose to complete the circuit but I see no reason to worry about starting the engine once a week anyway.

Thanks guys. I will wait. When pertaining to a rebuild I'm not afraid to admit that I'm a little wet behind the ears. Thanks again for your advice.

Don't mean to crash this thread. Larry if I haven't started my car in a year. New motor. Did the break-in. What is the best way to do so with a dry engine. Pull coil wire and crank motor for 2or3 minutes . Or pour brad penn in spark plug holes ? And remove driverside valve cover and pour oil end of head near firewall? Need correct answers guys! Nervous.

    No to all of those.

Ideally it would be nice to prime the motor. Spinning the motor on the starter for 2 minutes is tough on the starter. Not sure how much good that would do anyway.

The more I think about it... prime the motor.

What i do is pull the distributer and spin the oil pump with drill and have someone else turn the crank over by hand for a bit, put distributer back and fill carb bowl then start. never had any problems with engins setting for years and years.

Well I got my new radiator and it fits with zero issues. I kept the original transmission lines, replaced the thermostat, and replaced all the hoses. I started her up with zero issues. This is the problem that I'm having now its smoking from the back of the engine after about 3-5 mins of running. it looks like its more of the bottom back lower portion of the engine. I can hear the heater fan on but I don't feel anything coming out the vents. The tail pipes have a bit of black residue coming from them. Could some one give me some ideas to over come this issue.

We can't see it so you will have to be the judge of it. Likely that the smoke is just something cooking off the exhaust pipe and the black residue is likely soot being carried out with the water from normal condensation in the exhaust.

Check all the vacuum hoses, you may have a vacuum leak if the heater air doors are vacuum operated.

Take the car for a drive, on the highway for about half hour. Let it fully warm up, get on it a few times:TU:
The WORST thing you can do for any car is starting it up. and then shut it off, the coolant may get up to temp but the oil is still cool, and your creating a ton of condensation in the exhaust and oil, so your doing more harm than good.
Engine oil gets up to temp from the engine working (load) pretty much the same with the exhaust.
If you park the car for extended periods, just make sure to drive it hard and park it hot, then leave it till next time:TU:

So today was a miracle. I think she was blessed by the Skylark Gods. The heat came on and the dashboard light came on. I also had her running for about 10 mins before she started smoking/steaming. I would drive her but the brakes a gone. I'm going to put a front brakes on her next month. So as of right now I cant drive her. Plus I live on a hill and it would be very bad if I drove her down the hill with no brakes.

So, I'm wondering what could make the smoke/stream. The car is parked in the garage and I was thinking, that do to the exhaust being backed up about 5 inches from the wall could that cause the engine to overheat? Am I choking he engine? I do have a video.

Until you crawl under there and LOOK, we will all wonder where the smoke is coming from. Be careful, carbon monoxide can "addle" the brain.
