How much timing does a Stage 2 alum. head motor like. (12-1 comp)?

I have been running 34 retarding to 30 after 5000, based on iron head Stage 1 experience.

    Wouldn't a alum Stage 2 like/need more?

(exh temp too high now also, 1490 deg. with 94 jets Dom)

Hi Bruce, my stage 2, 494 motor is set at 38* we tried 34,36,40, on the dyno last year and it ran best at 38* so thats were its been for some time now.

    Hmmm....mines a 464, I wonder if there would be a diff?

Do you run any top end retard?

I had mine up at 38 once but it didn't hook so I backed it off. (local crappy traction track)

I have .40 over 12.5:1 455 i was running 36 total timing i have no retard at a track in New york the best the ran was 10.86 one month later same air 2700 feet over sea level i turned it up to 39 and run 10.67 so my guess is it like timing..going to new england dragway this wekend the air looks like it will be great so see how it runs i had a best there of 10.66 with 36 total and the air was 2000 feet so hoping for low 10.50's maybe a high 10.40???

    Bruce,

I am running a 464 Stg 2 engine with Street Elim. heads and 12.8 to 1 compression. I have been told my several people that my car will run "quite a bit faster" if I go from 30 total up to 34 to 36 degrees total advance. I have seen NO gain in advanced timing. I am not saying there is no gain on a dyno I am just saying there was NO et gain by making this change. So... I keep my timing at 30 total at all times.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Bruce
Before I scattered the wagon engine at Etown , I had a stock HEI with the MSD box and ran 34 degree total coming in at around 2200-2500 rpm, never got the chance to run in cool weather. I did run a 10.50 at Cecil in August ( 90 degree that day), so my 10.31 at E town would have put me in the low 20's at Cecil and if its cool ,I figure the old wagon would have been in the teens!

I guess I'm just a side line racer with war stories!

Last weekend I was going to try 34.......I usually run 31.
After the car went 9.64 on the first pass I was afraid to change anything. That was my best pass to date.
Next time out,I will get a baseline pass, then go to 34 and see if there's a difference.
I won't chicken out this time.........

I just have a hard time changing anything when my car is running well. But I will be on a mission for a 9.50 something

Bruce, as well it has 13.4 comp. ratio, and no retard at top end.
I'm with Gary, I get afraid to change things, but when I do, I change so much I usually don't now what I did!

Thanks guys....I think I'll kick it up some as long as it hooks. It leaves alot harder with more advance and I want to see what the anti-roll bar can handle. It seems like it could take alot harder hit now and go straight.

If the weather is OK, I'm looking for a teen or O at Cecil!
    10.29 at E-town, with 30 deg timing and shifting at 5500 1-2.
Gonna crank it up! (hopefully not blow it up!!!)

Bruce how did you make out with your timing i ran 10.56 at 126mph with a 1.47 short time the air was almost the same as when i ran a 10.67 so i guess my car seems to like the timing up at 39 degrees

Hey Jim....do the Stage 2 heads like retard? Someone was telling me that an aluminum head doesn't.

    So 35 .....or 38 retarding to 35 after 5000.

    Thanks

What's CMDR? Let me guess .......Central Mass Drag Racers?

You guys need more tracks up that way. The last time someone proposed one in RI, people has the idea it would bring in a "bad" element and gambling and compared it to the dog and horse tracks . Gimme a break!

I used to run Conn Dragway.....what was the one in RI?....can't think of it. Kind of a weird name......

We have a few tracks to run at New England Dragway in NH, Lebanon Valley in NY (kinda a slow track high alt.)and Oxford Plains in Maine (only 1/8 and very slippery) I haven't heard anything about the RI track in over 2 years so guess it not happening so i'm look forward to going to Atco in Nov. i heard it is a fast track to run at in Nov. Then I going to the buick nat. at Bowling Green

Bruce, mine actually liked 35* with a 1* retard in the Stinger Thermofire...
When I went to the MSD, I stayed with 35* flat.

My car likes 34 degrees total @ 2800. I backed it down from 38* and picked up 2 mph.

Mine made it's highest hp on the dyno at 32, but it runs better with more timing if the air is bad. If it's really lousy air, I'll run 36. I adjust it anywhere in the middle if the air is average. I NEVER run a lot of timing in great air. That's a good way to detonate a high compression motor!

Hey Mike (DuBuick), Cecil is only about 1 hour south (maybe less) of Atco and is worth the extra travel time (especially for the Buick race). I went to Atco once (I will never go back!!!) I got there before the gates opened and did not get in and thru tech for about 3 hours. Their BS made me miss one of the 2 time runs they offered that day. My car had current tech stickers from 6 or 7 NHRA tracks and points stickers from 75&80 (my home track) and the guy was still busting my a$$ over little things that no other track even mentioned. They did let me race but the tech line moved at a snails pace. It was by far the most disorganized track I have raced. It was not very crowded but they just did not seem like they were getting many cars down the track. Maybe I just went on a bad day but I won't take the chance when there are so many well run tracks.

I run 33* locked timing but have been thinking of adding some initial and retarding back to 33 at 5k rpm.

    Mike
