I've searched all the old threads I could find but i didn't see a picture of the underside of a converted steel hood. I've cut the hole and some of the under hood bracing but I'm wondering to what extent you guys cut the braces? If you have any pictures I would sure like to see them. Thanks
Here's a pic of mine. I cut away all the center cross bracing. I did leave all the bracing around the perimeter though. Hood was a little flimsy after cutting, but the scoop firmed it right back up. I used a RotoZip to make the cut. It works great. Nice little tool.
Good picture Phil. You did cut out almost all of it. I just cut enough so I could use a Jig Saw to cut the hole but I know that's not going to be enough. I tried using my roto-zip but after I snapped 3 bits in one inch I put it away. ou:
This is what ours came out looking like. After cutting the hole with a 3" metal blade with the trusty old Jigsaw I used a dremel & prolly 20 heavy dutycutting disks to cut away the bracing. Seemed to work Ok for what we needed. D.
The RotoZip has a 3" metal cutting wheel. That's what I used for all the cuts putting the scoop in. Worked great. I did not use any of the bits to do it.
I see I see said the blind man, you used the right tool, I didn't know they had a cutting wheel for the rotozip. I guess I'll need to go pick one up tomorrow.
Dana and Paul, do you guys seal the scoop opening to any kind of base plate like Phil did? Dana, mine looks just like yours at this point, I know what you mean about those dremel cutting wheels. I went through a ton of them. ou: BTW you guys are awesome, thanks for the pics and knowledge sharing on this one. I should be done by the weekend and I'll post some pics. :beer
I just picked up the roto zip cutting wheel attachment and wheels. Those braces don't stand a chance.
Rick, I run a Q Jet and Gary Kubisch fabbed me an airpan out of plexiglas that fits perfectly on the carb (and looks totally trick!)...I just added some 4" tall fire retardent foam and voila, instant sealed carb!
