I have two Chrome Valve Covers and would like to know....... WHAT YEAR ? WHAT DO THEY GO ON ? 1232069 Left Side 1232068 Right Side Thanks , TUFBUICK
Ron, I have two of the same covers also. I had one guy tell me that they were stage ones, and one tell me they weren't. o No: I pm'd Duane and he wasn't for sure either and he's the expert, lol(Hi Duane). So I guess I don't know the answer but look forward to it when it comes. I was told that there is no difference in the Stg. 1's and non Stg.'s other than the paint/chrome. later......................
According to my parts book bible the 70-72 Stage one valve cover number are 1233422 -R & 1233423 L. I think the only difference was the stages were chrome. But the numbers were stamped into the covers. Jim SChilf palbuick@aol.com
DAVE, Larry 70 GS has a documented 70 Stage 1, I have a documented 72 Stage 1. Both our cars have those #s stamped on the "CHROME" valve covers. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Ron, That is exactly what I have been told a couple times now in regards to the numbers, ''this is a doc'd car and it has the same #'s'' ect. I am more than a little confused I must admit, but I am sure an answer will come up sometime. The more I hear it the more I am thinking that the chrome is the only issue on this. later.......................
Part #'s between chrome and painted valve covers are not the same but, you can never tell what the factory did in those days. Any thing is possable. Valve cover p/ns '69 All (Stage 1) 1231542 RH '69 All (Stage 1) 1231543 LH '69 400-430 Eng. exc. Stage 1 1383430 RH '69 400-430 Eng. exc. Stage 1 1383431 LH '70-72 455 Eng. (Stage 1) 1233422 RH '70-72 455 Eng. (Stage 1) 1233423 LH '70-72 455 Eng. exc. Stage 1 1232068 RH '70-72 455 Eng. exc. Stage 1 1232069 LH '73 455 Eng. exc. Stage 1 1242782 RH '73 455 Eng. exc. Guys, The number you see is the casting/stamping number which can be (but is not always) the part number. The 70-72 Stage 1 valve covers have a different part number because they are a chrome version of the painted ones. Why would they cast or stamp different numbers for the chrome ones? Just send off the bare ones to be chromed. Manufacturers are cheap that way. :Brow: Mark
Chrome Buick vavle covers were also available in 1966 and 1967 as part of a dealer "engine dress-up kit". I don't have the part numbers for the individual valve covers. The funny thing is that there was not a chrome dress-up kit available in 1968 I wonder why they skipped a year o No:
My 68 Sportwagon has chrome valve covers on it. The motor is a 69 400 (checked the #'s, not a Stage 1 :ball: ), that was swapped in, but I don't know where the covers came from. They are the 68-69 style. They appear original and old with no indication that they were chromed plain ones. I can't find a record of 68 chrome covers in my books, but who knows. Does seem odd that 68 would have been left out. Mark
I went a little deeper into my parts book. In front of book there is a section for Special APPLICATION hEAVY dUTY eNGINE PARTS. AND sERVICE PARTS NECESSARY TO INSTALL ENGINE sTAGE 1 oPTION. vALVE ROCKER ARM COVER (chrome) R.h. #1231542 Valve Rocker Arm Cover (chrome) L.H. #1231543 Even has decal listed. All these parts were for 1969 Stage 1 option I had a kit of these valve covers, many years ago and there was the chrome mounting bolts and the decals. JimSchilf palbuick
