ST-300 high stall questions

    Hey guys:

I finally got around to rewiring the detent and converter circuits on one of my 67's. I have some questions before I tear into the trans.

    1) The stall seems excessive with the solenoid activated. I'm guessing in the 3000+ range(i'll hook up a tach this weekend). With this, the car seems sluggish from a dead stop.

    2) The trans will spin-up(neutral?) going around a right hand turn under braking, occasionally. :eek2:

I am basing these observations on the other two cars I have with the same drivetrain: 300 cu. in. with TH-300 and 2.78 gears. :3gears:

The fluid is in good shape, at the add mark, hot. The car accelerates good in low stall and the trans feels "healthy" in all other ways.

Just wondering if the filter could be loose and causing this or if anyone has any ideas. The trans needs to be re-sealed and I may be changing it out for a TH-2004r, so it's not like it really matters if I fix it, but, it would make a nice, fun spare!

    Thanks (in advance)

    Jim

PS No this is not the car in my avatar. :Brow:

    Jim,
    Whose converter are you using?

    converter

    Sorry Larry:

It's all stock, BONE stock! :Brow:

It should be more fun than it is.

Thanks for the look into this! :TU:

    Jim

PS It has been a long time since I have opened on of these up. :Dou:

Sounds like it's slipping to me Jim. The stock converters are pretty efficient, and behind the 300 motor shouldn't really stall up that much. It's a 12" converter. It should drive through the brakes, or spin the tires well before it's rated stall speed, when you power brake it.

    slipping converter

    Larry:

That's what I was thinking. But, what is causing this? The converter seems fine in low stall, can the vanes of the stator over-rotate?

This is why I was thinking the pump might be sucking air, or the fluid level was low. But, I don't think a pint is that low???

I have a few of these converters around, I just didn't want to tear into this car right now. I just may leave it in low stall and drive it. It's not like it's my only car! :Brow: I was just hoping for a little fun, because the car in my avatar would burn one tire for a block when I bought it 29+ years ago.

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Jim,
I guess it's possible for the stator vanes to rotate too much. Whatever limits the stator piston travel will determine how much of an angle change there is. Can you try another converter? BTW, the ST-300 converter is the one I have in my car. The 12" is the one Jim Weise rebuilds, and sells. Behind my 455, it stalls between 3000, and 3200 in hi, and around 1800 in low. If I power brake it in high, I can't get beyond 2500-2600 before it will turn my treaded street tires. 1500-1600 in low stall.

    Larry:

I may try another converter, I am going to check the stall with a tach this weekend.

It's not a big deal, this car will be in storage again by the end of the month, through the winter.

I will probably put a 2004r together over the winter anyway.

BTW here is a pic of my baby:
