Spring Question - 66 Special/Sport Wagon

Discussion in 'The whoa and the sway.' started by sport wagon '66, Nov 1, 2005.

  1. Cross-posting earlier question from wagon forum regarding springs for '66 special wagon. Looking to increase cornering & get better stance (while not breaking the bank on custom springs or trial & error). Have researched many posts here & learned much (thanks, Walt, for your post), but am still hung up & thought might get more input in this forum. I apologize for writing a book here, but am really getting desperate.

The car sags in rear, high in front, etc. Nothing stock in driveline Has a BBB (72 455), alum. radiator, electric fan (difficult to get sense of weight up front), TH400 & 10 bolt posi. Also has headers & Flowmasters, so cant go too low (live in a pothole, speed bump rich environment). Have put in a number of hours researching & hoping someone has insights, maybe even crossed this bridge before.

Live in city & & getting married - no longer have space, time, tools to tinker/install on own, so I started at two local spring shops. First guy refused to look at the car (just cranky old #%$^# focused on new cars). 2nd guy was cool... liked the car & gave me # for Moog & said if I found stock #s for springs, hed get them wholesale & put them in cheap. I contacted Moog & ESPO, both indicated they dont have products for this application. Also called Hotchkis & Eibach, who, aren't confedent springs will do the job, because they havent tested on this kind of car, & cant make any guarantees. Have read other threads that indicate Hotchkis lowering springs actually raised ride on Buicks! Eaton springs quoted very high price for custom job and could only make a best guess wouldnt return them if they didnt work out. Finally, the spring guy & another mechanic/friend said they would like to avoid cutting coils off (safety/insurance, I think).

Any advice from folk on springs that would be right dimensions, bring this car down a few inches (at least in front) & make stiffer? Suspect variable rate (or cargo?) might be best for rear on this one, but again, manufacturers claim dont make them for buick wagon? Have seen posts from some who can identify Moog springs based on dimensions & spring/load rates. Any help would be much appreciated.
