Here is an old top loader spread bore holley. R84014-1 0665 The primaries, secondaries and choke open freely. As you can see it has vacuum secondaries. I was told it is a 650 but would have to run the numbers to make sure. Would make a cool old nostalgia carb. $40.00 plus the ride. I also have some Thermo quads $20.00 ea. plus the ride Bob H.

The old 900 cfm 3 barrel Holley was the next best thing to a 1000 cfm Thermo Quad according to Jim Bell. Bob H.
I'm not sure that is quite accurate. I would think if they were that good, there would have been some mention of them in the proposed Stage 2 program at the time. I'm pretty sure all that paperwork makes no mention of either. Not saying they're bad carbs, since I know both can be tuned to run real strong . . . "just saying". The one on ebay is a 1050 cfm, and I think the 900 you're referring to is actually a 950 cfm. Can't beat them for the "coolness" factor.
I'll see if I can scan it, but I do have some period articles on Stage1 buildups written by Bell and/or Kennedy that mention the 1000 CFM TQuad as the carb of choice (from Hot Rod maybe?) The only reason I'm sure of it is that the former owner of my 73 spent alot of time at their shop and followed the article to the letter, and I just recieved the Thermoquad and a OEM Carter strip kit in the mail a couple days ago from his daughter who discovered them 2 years after I bought the car. She also included 2 mint license plate frames from the original selling dealer, Sangera Buick in Bakersfield. I was surpirsed when I opened that package! She told me for whatever reason, he didnt like the Theromoquad and replaced it after a year or so with a 650 Holley 4165 spreadbore (like the one for sale here, only mine has mechanical secondaries)
I'm just going by personal conversations with Jim. He told me if I couln't afford a 1000 Thermoquad go with a 900 3 barrel Holley. That was in the late 70s so maybe it was a 950. Bob H
